Answer:
If it is in a location where freezing is a concern, then yes,
The bottom sump canister is heavy duty plastic, but we all know plastic can crack,
I can't speak specifically to your application, but if you are also speaking about something like you don't live there in the winter and there is a possibly of freezing, they you should remove the sump and filter and put it on by-pass to be safe.

Yes. The instructions specifically say it. This is their statement in the "Use and Care" guide.
"Protect the Heavy-Duty Water Filtration Housing and piping from freezing. Water freezing in the housing will damage it."
You can read the instructions and guide by looking at the bottom right part of the product page, where it says "Info & Guides"

Another company sells a multi pack of 4 replacement filters that they say will fit the GXWH40L unit. Am I safe in purchasing replacement filters from them or should I stick with Home Depot? There is a big difference in the price.

I'm using HD's pvc 1" to 3/4" reducers, but with a garden hose -- I would imagine this should work for you as well, and you won't need the brass 3/4" to garden hose adapters either, so figure two bucks in the pvc section.
3/4" H/10x4 filter tanks are around, a pretty quick search will yield results.

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 88 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by filtering great. Water Hammer bad Have lived in this home for 29 years. Put in the whole house filter about a year ago and watched the filter become chocolate color around 3 months. Changed the filter, great. Started to wonder why I was getting "Water Hammer" on cold faucets constantly. Called the plumber and he wanted to put in a pressure regulator for $350. I passed. Pressure is 90psi. High I know. But it has always been. I'm online buying new filters for my unit and notice 3 others mention water hammer. Then they mention the bypass position stops the hammer! Swell. Bypass, no hammer. Filter, double hammer. Well what to do? Not going to buy the GXWH35L as was suggested. May 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by perfect for drinking water see condition of filter, clean look, easy to find filters,to bad it is not solid copper and pyrex glass kit, when replacing with new filter inside i like to clean all surfaces. lube the o ring put it up in the white plastic first then wiggle ,and turn the clear plastic tight with new filter inside into place.smooth every time .to undo the clear plastic i apply a lot of torque force slow and stead in a couple of seconds it comes undone ,not fast gerking force it will break the wrench ,i am luck i have two wrenches i hold together like one and keep pushed hard with me foot while holding the pipes steady and in place with my hands i hate leaks . Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This whole house filter is the best. It has a water shut off valve This whole house filter is the best. It has a water shut off valve so you don't have to shut the water off from the main. Great feature. Especially if you are on well but I would think a good function even if you are not. Also the clear design incurables you to see the filter. Not much good for us because as soon as we start running it turns orange because of all the clay. But shows it is filtering it! The price is right! July 20, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Difficult to replace filter - Canister Leaks Would not buy this again. Every time you replace filter which can be often, it leaks! from canister They need to design a better, leak proof system. What a pain to deal with a water leak. July 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It is easy to change out filters also worth the cost as I explain... Just want to note that putting in a pre-filter like this one going into your home is the best idea. Whether you have an RO system, water softener or some other kind of filtration in your home. Using this as your whole house pre filter or your first filtration system is the best idea. This will help you prolong your appliances and any other filtration system that uses household water. Some people who reviewed this product said it was very difficult to remove. First off it should never be that difficult to remove to change out the filter. You shouldn't over tighten it like the nuts holding your tire to your car. Second, which is the most over looked issue and why people have the most difficulty removing the canister to replace their filter is that they do not use the pressure relief button or didn't read the instructions properly and are not aware of what this button is or does. When you go to replace the filter you use the built in water shut off and bypass valve. Just turn the valve to stop the water flow. Press the pressure relief button to allow the pressure that is built up to escape which will allow a little water out when you do that. It happens quickly in about 2-3 seconds. The use the tool and remove the canister and replace the filter. Check the large O-ring and it is suggested to add a little bit of food grade grease to it. I would recommend doing this especially if you live in hot climate areas. It will prolong the life of the o-ring and of course make it easier to remove the cannister for your next filter replacement. Once you have the cannister screwed back on open the water valve just a little bit to allow the water to flow into the filtered cannister area along with pushing the pressure relief button. This will help relieve the air that is in the cannister. Keep hold down the button till you see the water level raise all the way to the top until the air is all gone and water is coming out of the pressure relief button. At that point you can turn the water valve all the way open. Remember to open up a faucet not far after the filter to allow water to flow out for 15 minutes then do it again after an hour for another fifteen minutes. This allows for any remaining air in the system to run out and be able to filter water at optimal condition. Also remember to reset the timer button by pushing down for 5 seconds and seeing it flash 5 times. It will be set to flash in 90 days to remind you to change out the filter. Now depending on how much water you use maybe 90 days will be too long or too short. But if you notice a significant drop in pressure in the water to your house than it would be a good guess to replace the filter. Normally you can tell best by when you take a shower if you are not feeling as if there's enough water pressure coming out of the shower head. The biggest plus to getting this type of filter cannister is that you do not need to add shut off valves before or after the filter housing. That is do to the fact that it has it built in at the top. You can select to bypass the filter. shut the water off at the filter or to allow the water through the cannister to be filtered. You can get filters that are cheaper with out the built in shut off and bypass valve but then you need to buy those valves separately and install them. The cost of your installation will wind up being much more than if you just bought this "all in one" filter cannister. I hope this helps anyone who has had any issues with their filter replacement or thought of buying one. June 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent I have had my system now for 4-5 years and haven't had a single issue with it. It was easy to install and it's very easy to use. Buy the clear one so you can see how dirty the filter gets. Otherwise it's pretty much a guessing game on when the filter needs changing. Filter is often quite dirty before there is a significant drop in water pressure. March 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So Far So Good So far, this has been working great. It installed onto our house water system quickly and easily. NOTE: It does not come with filters, which we did not realize when we ordered it. We weren't thrilled to have to unexpectedly run to Home Depot to pick up filters for it, but we did buy a couple to keep on-hand. It is nice to be able to see how dirty the filter is getting by just looking at the unit. The tool that comes with it seems as though it will make quick work of changing the filter when the time comes. May 3, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Hard filter change, leaky bypass and short warranty The unit does do the job, the filter starts to turn orange almost immediately and after 2-3 months, it's completely covered in iron particles giving it the color of rusted metal. But the filter housing unit (clear canister) is extremely hard to remove even with lubricant (food grade) applied to gasket and it would be next to impossible for anyone that isn't very strong to do so. Potential future problems would be the head unit (part that connects to plumbing) breaking due to repeated forcible canister removal for filter changes. Another problem is that after about 6 filter changes, the bypass valve is leaking more with each filter change and there is no replacing it according to GE. Their recommendation is to turn the water off completely which is not a big issue for myself as the unit is installed immediately after the shut-off valve in the basement. The timer has never worked not even right out of the box. The warranty is only one year (return to retailer for exchange with new or refurbished unit) with no option to purchase an extended warranty so I would not recommend this unit. September 16, 2015
