The main panel supplies 230 volts (nominal voltage may be 220 to 240 volt), from which 110 volt circuits are distributed to the common outlets and devices. 230 volts is available but an electrician would need to run a circuit from the panel to the air conditioner. The higher voltage is an advantage because the circuit can be run with smaller gauge wire than lower voltages. The actual cost of operation is the same whether 110 or 230 volt because you are paying for wattage, not voltage. Volt x amps = watts. For example, a 110 watt light bulb energized with 110 volts draws 1 amp. The same 110 watt bulb energized by 220 volts only draws .5 amps, but the wattage is the same, therefore the cost of operation is the same. Read Less

Answer:
220V must be installed by a licensed electrician. There is a definite advantage to being 220V versus 110V. Long technical explanation short, you will pay less in electrical costs vs. this same unit in 110V.

Answer:
Actually, US households have 110 voltage AND 230 voltage.
You would have to create a new circuit (breaker, wire, outlet) dedicated just for that A/C for it to operate properly. This is because it pulls so much electricity, that a 110 VAC circuit wouldn't work on it.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great unit, but don't expect to find parts I had this unit installed 20 months ago and it performed great. Unfortunately we flooded in the August flood in South Louisiana...The only part that seems to have failed was the outside control board...good luck trying to find one. Parts warranties are worthless if the parts are not available. I like the unit & am planning to order one to replace the flood damaged unit, but will keep the old one as a donor unit in case something should go awry. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased with this purchase We recently made an addition to an existing apartment in our barn. I researched as many of the mini-split systems as I could. Gree came in close to the top of each list, among professional installers, that I read. The warranty was among the best and the price was substantially less than the Mitsubishi that I had originally planned to buy. My installer said he really like the unit too. As for its efficiency - we have had weather that has required us to use both the heat & the A/C, both worked beautifully. This unit is so quiet we first thought is was not even running. The outside condenser is also super quiet, seriously you must really listen closely to hear it. This unit has only been up and running about 2 weeks so far - so I cannot speak for "long term" use. But I suspect based on the Gree warranty it will last for years to come. The apartment is about 500 sq ft, & very well insulated - the 1 ton seems to service it well. November 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Had this for 8 months and love it Got this unit to replace 3 baseboards in a 10'x23' room. Needed a unit that has heat and would work with temperatures down to 0. Positives: Heat quality is great even at 0 degrees. AC gets ice cold. Super energy efficient. Quiet. Average electrical bills on my 1000' sq. foot all electrical house with 3 Gree Terra units always set to 68-70 year round seem to be $90/month. Electrical draw is so low I can even run several of these off my 5500 watt generator in case of emergencies. Negatives: Poorly written manual not written by a native english speaker. Not sure how easy it would be to get this repaired if anything goes wrong with it. Recommended: Definitely! February 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product exceeded our expectations Installation was a breeze. You will need gauges with a R410A adaptor and a vac pump. I do have some ac experience and have a son that is an ac contractor so I did had back up. The instructions along with a how to video on youtube were very helpful. The indoor unit and the outdoor unit are both very quiet, work well and look great. I would buy this unit again. September 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cool design not dependable The indoor & outdoor units communicate and are controlled by PCB boards. So far I have not had it run more than 5 weeks. The outdoor unit's PCB has just crapped out again. That's twice. September 25, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty Simple Installation. My unit has been running for 2 weeks. Installed in an open area basement. No issues with the install or operation. The outdoor unit is so quiet, I actually thought it was broken--but just ultra quiet. I am commercial HVAC by trade. The service port on the suction valve has a 5/16" fitting that will not accept a standard refrigerant service hose. You will need to obtain a special 410A adaptor for mini-splits. I had to read the install instructions several times. The Chinese to English translation is not the best---but read it a few times & it starts to make sense. Wiring is simple. Main power goes to the outdoor unit. From there, it is routed back to the indoor unit along with one communication wire. July 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great! This is a great product. I originally purchased it for my small 10x10 office at home, but then decided to move and build a home office externally, so this unit sat for at least 6 months before install. Even still, it installed without any problem. The manual is borderline unusable, broken English. I still have no idea what "healthy" mode does, but it sounds good, so I leave it on. Searching the internet, I think it uses a UV light on the air or something. I also don't know what iFeel mode does. The rest is pretty self explanatory or explained in the manual good enough. I placed my unit just above a window, because I had no other space to put it, so I do have a problem where it measures the temperature way hotter in the morning when the sun comes through, then way cooler in the evening, so I have to adjust it all day. That's my fault, but I plan to see if I can find the temperature thermistor and move it away from the window. It must be on the bottom of the unit. You seriously can NOT hear this unit running from inside. Being in an out-building, I mounted this on the outside wall which is only about 1/2 inch thick T-11 wood, and with inner walls and insulation, the only thing I hear/feel is the low vibration when the compressor is on, but it's very very low. In fact, this is outside of the wall on my sound studio, and it doesn't affect my recordings. The inside unit is very quiet too, most of the time I don't hear anything. There are lots of good options like adjustable fins, auto swing on the fins, sleep timer, a quiet mode, etc, so I think for the price, it's a great buy. The cooling ability is perfect. I'm cooling a 16'x10' area with 5 windows with no problem. July 20, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Met some expectations, surpassed others. I went to the BM store @ Albany, NY and the woman that helped me was fantastic. Ordered this unit with some trepidation on whether the heating portion of this unit would perform as advertised. This part was critical since it would be the only source of heat for a small apartment. The unit seemed well put together and the install went smoothly. Got my vacuum and cranked open the compressor and into service it went, right in time for the second polar vortex. First thing was how quiet this unit is, both the indoor and outdoor. It's whisper quiet. I don't think I even needed the anti vibration pads I put in there. Most importantly, we've had 10 deg/f highs and -5 deg/f lows and this unit is still pulling heat for a 400 sf apartment. January 22, 2014
