Product Overview

GRK’s R4 Self Countersinking screw has 6 self-contained cutting pockets which act like a router and transport the drill dust away from the edge of the screw hole. They also widen the countersink hole only around the head shape. The screw head top closes the hole exactly, leaving no damaged fibers around the wider area of the head.

  • For use in wood, particle-board, cement fiberboard, plastic, sheet metal
  • Self-tapping
  • No pre-drilling
  • No stripped heads

Customer Questions & Answers

Is this considersed a structural screw?

Asked by: Paul
Thank you for your question. While the R4 does carry code approvals and structural values that come with it (documented in ESR-3201), the primary reason it is not a structural screw is the design of the underside of the head. The R4 is designed to countersink into the wood you are connecting, creating a clean finish while still creating a strong connection. The RSS (Rugged Structural Screw) on the other hand is made of much thicker material with higher structural values and has a built in washer head that draws pieces of wood together much tighter, creating better structural connections.

#10 x 3-1/8 in. Star Drive Bugle Head R4 Multi-Purpose Wood Screw (210-Pack) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are great They're a little spendy compared to run of the mill screws but paying a little more for a lot less hassle is completely worth it. The star (torx) bit is light years better than a Phillips or Flat bit. It never chews up the head, it always grabs, you can always back it out. The threading is really unique and functional. The tip has a knife edge which makes it really easy to start, and there is a unique threading near the head that is supposed to cut down on splintering. I haven't had any issues with splintering or driving them - and had zero waste on my last project. They're rated for exterior / pressure treated use but still have a dull brass finish - which means you can use them in a pinch on interior projects where a grey screw might have looked bad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great multi-purpose screw This is a very nice product. The tip of the screw has a cutting edge in it to allow you to skip pre-drilling the hole. The head is fluted to self counter sink in wood. The screws require a torx bit which is included in the pail. The pail lid has a place to hold the bit. I drove screws in 2x4s with a battery drill. Once the tip of the screw bit into the wood, the screw drove all the way through the wood quickly, smoothly and easily. Driven into the end of the 2x4 they sank nice and clean. Driven into the side of the 2x4 there was some splitting and tearing of the wood. The lid of the pail keeps popping off when I try to open it which is an indication of poor pail design but the screws themselves are excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good short screw and worth the price Since I discovered high-tech screws, I have mostly stopped using lag-screws or abusing drywall screws. The funny shape heads and threads really do go-in and hold better. And after a fling with a lower-price brand, I am back to favoring GRK. The low-price screws my helper picked didn't want to start, didn't want to go where aimed, slipped on the bit, and didn't feel firm. These GRKs go in and HOLD. They have near the strength of lag-screws, cost less so you can use more, and don't split lumber the way lag-screws can. Self-washered too. I used these to repair laps and slices in an old hasty-built woodshed. Nails were not holding in this funky old lumber. I put a couple screws in a splice and it held WELL. I put a couple more in to handle snow-load, and I expect it to stay strong for another 30 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for replaging old nails or screws I have an old bee hive that was starting to come apart. The old 2" decking screws used to build it were stripped. I wanted to try fixing before replacing since the bees were doing well. I tried these screws in the old holes and had no problems with grabbing the wood in the old holes with the larger diameter threads. In addition the cutting tip made east work of lengthening the holes with no splitting problems. Next I am going to use these to replace some nail pops on my front porch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fasteners! These fasteners as pretty unique in their design. I have been using another brand from another big box company but found these fasten with less strain and pain on my shoulders. They bite the wood quickly and will actually go below the surface effortlessly with a serrated type head. Another advantage is that you will be charging your drill battery less often because of their design. Someone put some thought into making a better fastener and succeeded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality General-Purpose Screws I've used other GRK screws before and they are nicely engineered to start into the material smoothly and quickly and then "pull" into the wood with less effort that traditional screws. I don't really like the T-25 Torx (Star) bit head because even though one comes with the bigger packages of screws, I don't have these in my drill driver sets. I would have preferred a square drive, but they do work great and it is not enough to keep me from giving them a 5-star review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to drive and hold well These screws seem easier to drive than a deck screws. I used them on new and old pressure treated wood and was surprised how easy they went in. I like the large head on these, as it does not pull in as easily. I would prefer a square drive over the torx drive. The holding power seems to be as good as a common desk screw. I'll see how they hold up against rusting, to see if there are better, worse, or about the same as coated deck screws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good fasteners Not much can be said about screws. These screws do their job of securing parts together well. I recommend to pre-drill a small pilot hole first into the wood to prevent splitting of the wood. One note, the screw is long so it tends to wobble at first... use a bit driver that has a sleeve on it, that will make the installation work so much easier.
