Product Overview

GRK’s R4 Self Countersinking screw has 6 self-contained cutting pockets which act like a router and transport the drill dust away from the edge of the screw hole. They also widen the countersink hole only around the head shape. The screw head top closes the hole exactly, leaving no damaged fibers around the wider area of the head.

  • For use in wood, particle-board, cement fiberboard, plastic, sheet metal
  • Self-tapping
  • No pre-drilling
  • No stripped heads

Customer Questions & Answers

could you used it for treated wood

Asked by: jojo
Absolutely. They are multi-purpose, not single purpose. They are very good and hold quite well.

#9 x 2-1/2 in. Star Drive Bugle Head R4 Multi-Purpose Wood Screw (300-Pack) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Screw One glance at the "engineered" look of the screw and I was curious, a 100 screws later I am convinced that it is a "better mouse trap". The split point starts easily (even in seasoned wood), the conventional section of the thread drives well, the spiral portion and "self countersink" head complement the works, with a strong hold and flush seating. The star socket is well worth making sure that you have a T-25 bit handy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just a Screw but an Engineered Fastener I love to work with wood, and that usually means joining two pieces together in some fashion. This product does not just screw wood together, it fastens them with multiple engineering tasks in one fastener. With this item, no need to pre-drill, no need to countersink, no need to worry about stripped heads or rusting. I will never buy regular deck screws again. This will save both my time and money in wasted screws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great workmanship in these crews GRK is fast becoming my favorite manufacturer of high quality multipurpose screws. I have used their 3" ones for a while and they really differ from prior screws I have used. The hedd bites firmly so that it self seats in the project. They are especially useful in decking and other projects where one wants the screw to be hidden. The price is right and I plan on purchasing other sizes/lenghts from Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty Cool I seems a little silly to get excited about screws, but these things are pretty cool. The self tapping feature is impressive and really does work as I've had no issues driving these things in without pre-drilling. The star drive is obviously a big plus too. I watched the video that shows a screw being driven through two boards so I had to try it myself and sure enough it's a piece of cake.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I won't use anything else They're a little spendy compared to run of the mill screws but paying a little more for a lot less hassle is completely worth it. These screws use a star (torx) bit... which is light years better than a Phillips or Flat bit. It never chews up the head. It always grabs the driver. I can always back it out. The threading is really unique and functional. The tip has a sharp edge which allows you to stab it into the wood and let it hang there while you get your driver setup and connected. There is a counter-thread section at the top near the head which is supposed to cut down on splintering. I recently rebuilt an old cedar swingset for my kids using these and that wood was some of the driest wood I've ever screwed into. I had zero splits. They're rated for exterior / pressure treated use but still have a dull brass finish - which means you can use them in a pinch on interior projects where a grey screw might have looked bad. Honestly, I won't use any other screw except this style now. The old grey and brass phillips stuff is dead to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Screws-- I can't say enough about the durability and ease of using these screws!! They go through anything I have tried so far-- Hard wood, metal, soft wood, PVC. They drill in so smooth, the gripping and holding power of them is great.I can't imagine anything coming loose when using them!! Great product-I didn't know about them till recently from HD. I have already told some of my friends how great they are. Glad I got the 300 pack!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MULTI PURPOSE SCREW These really pull themselves through dense wood quickly and also countersinks the heads flush to surface. The built in bit holder in the lid of the box was a nice touch, no more looking for the special bit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great multi-purpose screw This is a very nice product. The tip of the screw has a cutting edge in it to allow you to skip pre-drilling the hole. The head is fluted to self counter sink in wood. The screws require a torx bit which is included in the pail. The pail lid has a place to hold the bit. I drove screws in 2x4s with a battery drill. Once the tip of the screw bit into the wood, the screw drove all the way through the wood quickly, smoothly and easily. Driven into the end of the 2x4 they sank nice and clean. Driven into the side of the 2x4 there was some splitting and tearing of the wood. The lid of the pail keeps popping off when I try to open it which is an indication of poor pail design but the screws themselves are excellent.
