Product Overview

Sta-Kool 805 Metal-X is a tough, white elastomeric roof coating that is formulated for exceptional bonding strength to metal roof surfaces. This high performance product also contains rust inhibitors, which provide long-term protection to metal surfaces. Metal-X expands and contracts with the roof’s movement to resist cracking and peeling. The bright white finish keeps metal roofs cooler by an average of 50° compared to uncoated metal, thus minimizing heat stress associated when metal roofs expand under the hot sun. Metal-X provides a protective barrier that reflects, seals, and protects from the elements. In turn, this provides a longer life to metal surfaces, helps to cool surfaces and will help reduce interior temperatures. This environmentally advanced formula helps reduce energy cooling demand, is low odor, and low VOC, making it a great choice for your metal roof. Covers approximately 50 sq. ft. - 75 sq. ft. per Gal. per coat depending on porosity of the surface.

I have a turn of the century home in south Florida with a metal roof that was coated with an aluminum fibre coating many, many years ago. It is not peeling, or flaking but rust is starting to bleed through. Is this an ideal product to recoat that?

Answer:
The Sta-Kool Metal X would be a great option for you. Just note that you will need to treat any rust spots with a suitable rust inhibitive primer and sealer. The Sta-Kool Metal X will give you a bright white finish, which will keep the roof surface cooler and lessen heat gain into your home.
Good luck with your project, and please let us know how your job turns out.

Answer:
We recommend using the Gardner Sta-Kool 390 or 440 White Roof Patches. Seal all screw heads with this, and then install the roof coating over entire roof. Metal roofs always leak at the screw holes over time. Good luck with the project and let is know how your job turns out.

We do have a patch to use with this, but if you used something else, test a small spot first. It should work, but test first.

CAN THIS BE APPLIED WITH A SPRAYER?

The roof is on a large shop. Looking to use vinegar to kill the rust and pressure wash it then scrub where needed and then wash again. Would like to spray the coating on if possible to make the day go faster. Figure I could spray 2 or more coats in a few days faster than rolling, and get a better coverage.

5-Gal. Sta-Kool 805 Metal-X Metal Roof Coating is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A product that really works This coating is awesome. At an outside temperature of 93 in August I used my infrared thermometer & the underside of my metal back porch roof at 3 P.M was 148 After applying 2 coats of 805 at the same time & temperature the reading was an unbelievable 98 degrees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Theis is great stuff! Paint went on with better square footage coverage than I thought it would. Perhaps I was just not putting it on as thickly as I should have been. I was using a roller on a corrugated metal roof. Since I had paint left over- I just did another coat. Looks beautiful and the barn/shelter is much cooler inside. I bought 2 of these 5 gallon buckets initially and I'm glad I did. This will be very handy to have around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Noticeable difference in temperature We had a "budget" metal shed that we waited a bit long to assemble, so by the time we did it had quite a bit of metal rust showing. We bought STA-KOOL 805 METAL-X METAL ROOF COATING to seal up the metal to prevent further rust and also seal the joints from moisture. We live on a hill with almost no trees in Texas heat. When the coating was complete on the roof and sides, it went from a virtual oven inside to a shed you could actually work in with just a box fan.

I bought this to 'seal and protect' thinking it would act like Snow Coat or similar. First heavy rain, LEAKS. I am very disappointed as the window of summer for properly applying these items has passed. Waiting for a clear stretch in the weather and will have to redo the job with something else. May be GREAT as a metal roof cooler. Not great as a sealer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Review Sta Kool 805 Metal - X Metal Roof Coating The Sta-Kool 805 Metal - X Metal Coating was easy to apply. Clean up was very easy. The product did help reduce the temperature in the metal building about 10 degrees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results The metal roof of our sunroom was quite rusty. The product overview stated Metal X contained rust inhibitors. From the advice of the staff at our local St Petersburg Home Depot, we ordered the product. The metal roof was cleaned and treated with Prep and Etch. We followed the application instructions and 2 coats of Metal X was painted on with a paint roller and brush. It looks great. The results were to our satisfaction and more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs well so far... This coating was pretty easy to apply on an old metal roof and has held up well during the first few months of fall and winter. It seems to be a good idea to pay close attention to the manufacturer's recommendations as to appropriate weather conditions and application methods. I applied it to a decades-old tin roof (about 200 square feet, over a garage), which had previously been covered with a black asphalt-based coating. The white elastomeric coating has provided full coverage, but it required two applications (just as the manufacturer had recommended). Because of fall weather conditions, the coating was applied at slightly cooler temperatures than recommended; and unfortunately there was an unpredicted rain shower less than 48 hours after the first application. The result was that the coating took slightly longer to dry, particularly in spots and along seams where the coating had been thickly applied; and several very small sections were washed out by the unexpected rain. Nevertheless, the second coating took care of all of the problems. Patches that were initially applied with water-based products have held up well too, after the coating was put down. The bright white color looks a lot better than the old black, asphalt-based coating. Because it's water-based, clean-up was pretty easy. It should do a good job of reflecting sunlight from the old roof. So far, it's been holding up well and providing a good seal. Of course, time will tell.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works! We painted a leaking metal roof on an old mobile home. We pressured wash the roof first. We applied the sealing compound where necessary then painted the whole roof. It rained a week or so later and the leak was gone.
