How fast do u need to sand after applying product

Asked by: Vinnie
Fast is bad - don't sand it too soon. Let it cure per the package directions, then sand it. Medium grit paper (120) will smooth it beautifully. If you need to take off a significant amount to level it, you'll need 80 grit and a block. In other words, it sands like a good hard patching compound would be expected to. It's comparable to sanding plaster or hardwood. People saying this product "can't be sanded" are simply wrong and don't know what they're doing. It's much harder than spackle or drywall compound, so you can't just slop it on and level it later with some hand-held 120-grit (which is what I think most of the people criticizing this product were trying to do). Spackle & drywall mud will let you get away with that. The fact that this product won't does NOT make it an inferior product, it means its much more durable but you have to apply it more carefully. Apparently that's just too much for a lot of people to do. Too bad, because it means they're limited to using weaker but more forgiving products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has to CURE before you can Sand it! otherwise you might as well be sanding bubblegum! All these idiots giving one star applied this product, waited 30 minutes until it was paintable then tried to sand it only to realize it was worthless because guess what... it hadn't cured yet and was still hardening. After 2 hours you can indent this product at 1/4" thick applications. I used it in place of a Veneer Plaster for a bathroom ceiling. it worked out flawlessly after 24 hours it sands just like normal gypsum plaster... It's perfect for an ultra smooth surface that's both strong and water tight unlike normal plaster sparkle which is not recommended for bathroom (steamy) applications.

It has completely ruined a project that I've spent 100 hours building. It dries to the consitancy of concrete and cant be sanded or removed. I can't believe this is even in the same area as Spackle because it should be with the concrete products. NO WHERE on the container is there any mention of this. Home Depot should remove this product from the area it's in.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zero stars!!!! So a home depot employee recommended this to me when I told her I had two long hairline cracks in my kitchen ceiling. I put it on lightly and expected to be able to sand it smooth when it dried. My ceiling is ruined! And so is my weekend! We've even tried an electric belt sander and it started pulling off chunks of drywall in the process.

I would not have bought. It DOES NOT SAND after it is dry, ugh! Only good for maybe little nail holes. I now have patches that can be seen through my paint. Only good if you can meticulously smooth on the first go around which we all know is near impossible.

I have not found a better one for patching larger holes, and I've been doing major DIY home repairs for 40 years. I love this stuff, and I hope HD doesn't stop carrying it because of all the bad reviews here. I can't believe all these low scores! And I'm mystified at the people who say they couldn't sand it. Apparently, a lot of people here expected this product to act like ordinary spackle. THIS ISN'T SPACKLE. The containers I've bought said "patching paste" on the label. They didn't say "spackle" anywhere, so I didn't expect it to behave like spackle. This product dries much stronger and harder than regular spackle - that's a GOOD thing. Soft spackle is fine for very small things like nailholes, scratches and chips. This product works for larger areas and severe gaps that spackle can't handle. IT SANDS JUST FINE! I had NO trouble sanding this product after letting it cure. Yes, it's harder to sand than regular spackle. JUST ABOUT ANYTHING IS HARDER TO SAND THAN SPACKLE, including a lot of wood. Yes, when the patch is as hard as the substrate (or harder), sanding technique becomes important. If you don't want to deal with that and you don't need the extra strength or hardness, stick to softer stuff. If you want soft, easy-to-sand spackle, HD has several, but that's not this product. If you want a VERY strong, flexible (but not soft) patch that is still NOT DIFFICULT TO SAND, this is the stuff to buy.

How many bad reviews will it take before Home Depot stops selling this product. Looks like if you buy something you better come home and read reviews before you use it. You can not sand this stuff when dry. You pay money to buy it to fix a problem and it creates a bigger problem. DO NOT BUY THIS.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE!!! Zero Stars!!! I bought this while in the store (without reading any reviews) and found it horrible to work with. It isn't workable for long - wet knife or dry - and it shrinks a HUGE amount when it dries. What could be done in two coats with joint compund would take 4-5 with this. The first coat dried over six hours, and it was so hard a medium grit drywall sanding pad wouldn't touch it. Good thing I just had to knock down a couple very small peaks. As it was, I was already beginning to consider feathering the next coat to the high spots. Cleanup is ridiculous, too. It doesn't reconstitute in warm water as does most spackle or joint compund. It cleans off like nearly-set mastic - you almost have to scrape one knife with another. The label makes it sound like an awesome product. In reality, it is *absolute garbage*!
