i have a piece of plastic 1/4 inch thick with a 1/4 in hole. will the treads be long enough to screw on the top lock down nut?

Answer: 
You'll need a little less than 1/2" in order to mount it. The maximum space between the two mounting nuts is 0.41".

This is a push-on / push-off switch, it is not a momentary contact switch where you have to maintain contact to turn it on or off.
