Customer Questions & Answers

can this be in stalled without going thru the door casing?

Asked by: diy1
Yes, the box and escutcheon are for all level codes. Some codes only require the wires and wire connections to be covered, so rubber wire conduit may be used. I installed just the small button-part one in a china cabinet (made my own wood cover), then covered the wires well, then hid the wires well.

2 doors, and 2 switches

How would this work with 2 doors and 2 switches? I want to be able to open either door and have the light come on.
Asked by: jkuchtaofmi
You connect the poles in parallel, so that any switch will close the circuit. They are of the "normally closed" type, meaning they close the circuit when the button is not depressed -- that is, the door is opened.

Does this switch need to be grounded?

I removed a switch that is currently installed in the door jamb and it only has two wires and no metal encasement. Does this need to be grounded?

Quickly realized that this particular switch is more of a builder's item, requiring that the wall be accessed to run wiring from the source (old manual switch) so we have purchased a motion-sensor type switch to be used in its place. That being said, this is an excellent product for the correct application. I have found a new application in my workshop for this switch so I'll be keeping it. The 10-amp rating is more than adequate for lighting applications, even ventilation fans. Well made, positive action, easy to install, but you do need to open the wall to run wiring to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Fine This switch functions perfectly. Installation was tough, however. The switch comes with two pigtails that slip over blade connectors on the switch. The box is too small to get 14 ga wire and wire nuts in the box with the switch. I needed to connect directly to the blades on the switch. The blade connectors are 3/16 inch rather than the more common 1/4 inch. HD didn't have any of the proper size. By squashing a 1/4 socket I got a tight fit. I got it to work but with more difficulty than I had expected.

Wasn't in the package so must have been a return? Someone with an electronics soldering gun and a lot of patience might have repaired it, but that wasn't me, so I returned it. Once I got a complete switch, the job went well and now I have a light in my hall coat closet which is very handy.

Excellent choice for closet lighting or anywhere hands-free activation is desired. These switches have become scarcer and expensive in the last decade, but this seemed easonably priced ($2 worth of parts and $15 for UL approval).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too big I wish this device was smaller to ease the installation. However the switch itself is a good quality with a positive "click" feedback.
