Answer:
The lights indicate which wire inside the outlet is incorrectly connected. The back of the tester clearly shows the combination of lights and what they mean. Without having the tester in front of me (which would need me to go home from the office) I can't provide you with the exact sequence/combination options shown on the back of the tester. There's also a papr instruction inside the tester packaging - Read More

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worked as advertised This outlet tester is easy to view and easy to use. The lights are clear and the diagram on the back show what each sequence means so that you can easily figure out which wire or circuit is broken on the outlet. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A really useful outlet tester The product had clear instructions, was easy to use and very handy. September 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 120 vac outlet tester Device worked exactly as described, great product, great price. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Received a Newer model. Was purchased online and got a store pickup. The body is Grass Green (not black as pictured). Lights are easy to see but don't expect easy viewing if looking directly from the top/bottom. Your standard 90 degree viewing angle. Ground prong is U-Shaped (not rounded). Was not a problem for me but some people may have outlets that make it a very tight fit w/ the ground opening. To solve this simple problem, just get some pliers and slightly bend the end of the ground. problem solved. January 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked as Described Online to store ordering. Arrived on time and was easy and quick to pickup before shopping in the store. November 5, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not as Easy to see as previous Yellow brand. Years ago I purchased a tester from Home Depot and it was yellow....and worked great and everything was easy to see. This new brand (in Green) worked just as well except the lights are harder to see and read. Again, the actual read was good, just have to look closer to get a good read when light is brighter. Older brand was easier to see. November 17, 2011
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor design of label It is impossible to interpret the label on the tester. Zoom in on the picture above and you will see that 4 of the settings look identical -- all white: Open Ground, Open Neutral, Open Hot, and CORRECT. And the other 2 results look alike: Hot/Grd Rev, Hot/Neu Rev. They need to reprint the label. July 30, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very poor design quality! The lights are so dim you can't see if they are lit up in bright sunlight, & in dim light, you can't tell which lights are lit - they bleed across onto the other light areas! March 1, 2012
