Customer Questions & Answers

I am getting a positive reading 12" to 18" from junction box. Impossible to determine which wire is hot.

Asked by: Slim
Sometimes these testers pick up stray voltage or static electricity. This is a common issue with non-contact voltage testers. Units like this are really good at telling you if a line is hot or not, but do not have the ability to adapt to different enviorments. The GVD-3505 has a sensativity dial that allows you to get on top of the wire all the way up to a foot away.

Customer Reviews

50-600 VAC Circuit Alert Non-Contact Voltage Tester (Case of 5) is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from many false readings This is the second one of these I have owned. Silly me. The first was unreliable after a year or so the second has started giving me false positive readings. As I can't believe it when it says a line is hot I have no reason to believe it when it says the line is dead. Worse than worthless at this point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent little device The best feature of this device is that it uses triple A batteries that you can find nearly anywhere. Other voltage testers run off of watch batteries which are outrageously expensive to replace. I've used this device quite a few times. It fits into a pocket easily instead of having to carry around a Fluke 77BN clone just to check power in water tanks, air handlers, and whatnot.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked for a while, then gave faulty readings I used this tester for probably two years with no issues, but then it started giving faulty readings. Even when held up to a wire that wasn't connected to anything, it would show there was voltage on the line. VERY frustrating when trying to trouble shoot electrical circuits during a renovation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work Replaced batteries. Tried everything- thought it was me, but just did not work. Went to menards and bought the Sperry brand and it works as it should.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective Item I used the batteries which came with the product, and replaced those with new ones. This tester was not functional, and was returned.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from cheap but didn't last as long as I thought I don't use the one I had very much (I'd classify as very light usage) and I had mine for 2 years until it just stopped working for no reason. Changed batteries, shook it, nothing. I didn't drop it or get it wet or even dusty. Simply stopped working right out of it's very own slot on my tool bucket bag. Other than that, worked fine up till it stopped working.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can you hear it? Very quiet tone. Very low level of lighting. I would suggest spending more bucks for a better one. This is more or less a throw away tool to the tool box in case you need one. Like a cheap 99 cent screwdriver.
