Customer Questions & Answers

How does it release bolt or nut?

Asked by: KEV
You just pull it off. The bolt head or whatever your're trying to turn, pushes up the wires above it while the wires on the sides stay in place. As you turn the socket, the wires along the sides bind against the item being turned and thus gives it a grip.

Does this work for hurricane shutter wing nuts?

Home Depot is out of wing nut drivers, is this a good replacement for that?
Asked by: Jim
As long as they can fit in the socket, it should.

I got this socket with the idea that I would use it to repair push mowers. Lots of different sized bolts on the different brands of machines, and I thought this would make it so I wouldn't have to change out the socket every few bolts. I did not take into account that the overall size of this socket is the largest common denominator. So it's too large to fit in many of the small areas that a smaller socket would fit into. That being said, would I recommend this? For general stuff, yes. For small, tight spaces, no. I'm going to leave it on my spare drill so I can still make somewhat quick work of the many bolts I have to remove, while using my main drill for the two most common smaller size sockets.

Not on normal bolts, or stripped ones. I tried and tried, and I definitely know how to use tools. That's what I do for a living... The pegs always get stuck and refuse to come back up, multiple ones.. It wouldn't grip anything, and I bought it a year ago. It's been sitting ever since, completely useless like it always was.

I really haven't used it on a specific application but I do think it will do the job I need it for in the near future. Basically I was looking for something to help with installing hooks to hang Edison Light strands. If you've ever hand tightened these hooks, your fingers get sore real fast. I'm hoping this will grab the hook end and with a quick pull of the drill trigger, it should turn it enough to hold tight into the wood substrate. This is the reason I can't give it a 5 star as I haven't tried it out for what I bought it for yet.

The only thing I don't like about this product is that, if you have bolts that are old and really set into place, the Gator Grip can't catch hold of it. It's not strong enough. For everyday use though, it's pretty great. We rebuilt a fence and when it came time to take the bolts out of the old hinges, we had to go to our socket set and manually loosen half the bolts before we could get the Gator Grip to work on them. It's a good idea, just wish it could grip a little tighter.

Though the grip could get a handle on the head it was unable to apply the torque required to remove the stuck bolt without my removing additional surrounding building material. I'll keep it in my toolbox for the occasional odd job. Good find, wouldn't pay more than the $12 price though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lag bolts and a phone pole I did not have a square socket to remove the square head lag bolts to pull the gaurds off a phone pole. I did not think the gator would do the trick, but it worked great. I then used it to install 2 new 3 inch guards with new lags and again, it worked like a champ. Nest $$$ I have spent on tools in a long time!

I bought this to remove a particular hex head bolt that is 5/16" and fairly rounded. It would not grip the hex head at all to remove it. Just spun around it even though it was a size that it should have worked with easily. Before I give it 1 star, I want to try it again with larger bolts.

The head was stripped (not by me) This tool did not work. I bought a pair of vice grips. They worked. I feel if the plug hadn't been so tight and probably had some kind of thread sealer, this tool would have worked.
