Customer Questions & Answers

If generac generator is 30 amp and house is 20 amp can I use this cord

Asked by: Perplexed
This cord is not designed to connect the generator directly to your home's power supply. To avoid damage to your home and potential injury, a manual transfer switch must be installed if you would like to use a portable generator to power loads within your home. To ensure you are utilizing the appropriate products for your desired configuration, we would recommend working with a certified electrician in your local area. Can I use a standard 3 prong female outlet to connect a home generator?

I want to order a 10000 watt home generator. The builder installed a standard 3 prong female outlet that he said I could hook a generator to. My question is will it work? If so, will I lose efficiency that I would have with a more robust connection? If the standard outlet won't work what is recommended for a hook up?
Asked by: Mel
At the bare minimum, an automatic standby generator should always be connected to an automatic transfer switch before being connected to your home's main panel. Depending on the switch required for your personal setup, different connection methods may be required. To ensure that you are utilizing the appropriate products and configuration for your backup power needs in association with any local codes that may apply, we would recommend working with a certified electrician in your local area. If you need help locating a certified party in your area, please contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) with your local postal code.
