This brand new generator failed on it's 8th week of just exercising. 1.5 hours total use. 24/7 365 days service is not accurate, No Sundays or Holidays is what Generac customer care stated. Took 5-7 business days to receive the defective part- the control panel which is a known problem item according to repair service. Experienced first power outage while this brand new generator sat in error mode unable to perform as promised. For the many thousands spent to purchase their product, overnight express shipping should be standard customer care. Can not recommend as have yet to experience it's service!!

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Kaos Great Product - Does what is suppose to do
The Generac 17kw is fabulous. It will power 16 circuits in my house (200 amp panel). I have ran the A/C, stove, microwave, outdoor lighting, 2 tv's, a computer, refrigerator and all downstairs lighting, upstairs lighting and a hair drier all at once with no noticable effect on the ability to run anything. All 16 circuits powered beautifully at once. Unit also has an external plug (15 amp) that may be of use and may be used by neighbor to help them out. Noise level is great. It is located about 15 feet from my living room and you can hardly hear it with the tv on. I was expecting it to turn on this past saturday and had to mute the tv to verify it was running. It sounds about as loud as a mower 3 to 4 doors down. That's not bad at all. Neighbors can hardly hear it. Super product. Beware...Track your usage as my installer said that Generac is very picky when it comes to warranty claims. Be sure to keep all receipts for servicing etc. and a run log. Installation of the transfer switch is definitely NOT a DIY project. My locality requires electrical and gas inspections after installation and before unit is fired up. A good install company will include all permits in installation costs. Depending on your circumstances and property (how far lines have to be ran etc.) it would not be beyond expectation to expect install costs for this generator to run from $7000 to $8400 (including generator costs) depending on your circumstances. If more, get a second quote (I'd advise that anyway). This range is for NG. propane tanks to be sure will add additional costs. Expect the 20KW generator to run around $1-$1.2K more (including the generator). Ask about any additional extension on the manf warranty from your install company. Mine offered an additional year parts and labor (from 2 to 3 years). Do your research for your area. But this is a super great product!!! It is costing about $3-$4 per month to exercise each week. My house is about 2100 sq ft. It cost about $20-$30 per day to operate during an outage. This is certainly cheaper than a portable. If you are in an earthquake zone you should consider propane backup if generator will be powered with NG. If gas lines are damaged you will have a backup fuel source). One other item, your a/c will likely require two circuits, as mine does. The furnace fan will take another one. That leaves you with 13. That handles all my needs. Washer and dryer (you should have enough clean clothes to last a week or two) would be doable with the 20kw as you have 4 more circuits (dryer will likely take two). The only kitchen item I left out was the dishwasher (not crucial for a few days). If you can live without the laundry and dishwasher, you can save approximately $1k-$1.2k for the 20kw. If not, you may want to consider the additional cost of the 20kw. Hope this helps. These are answers to questions I had going in. Kaos

Rated 5 out of 5Â by BigGreenSalem Great backup House Generator proving itself during the storm.
We installed this unit a couple years ago to provide power during blackouts for an elderly person. It has been doing great since the install. It runs a backup test every week and I only have to check it every couple months. We only have 245 hrs on the clock and it has been great. This week we lost power after the summer storms came through. It has been running non-stop for days. At this point, it has become one of ths smartest purchases we have ever made. With the heat pushing 100 deg, there is no way we could keep going in the house without it. Thanks Generac!!

Generator arrived on time, but with damage to access panel door caused by the shipping crate apparently being bumped by a forklift. A quick online chat with a homedepot.com representative resulted in the new replacement part being shipped to me with no hassle, easy fix. They were great to deal with.
Fit and finish of the entire generator, inside and out, is perfect. This is an extremely nice and well built unit. It is mounted onto a small concrete pad at the end of our garage, and looks like it belongs there. About the same size as our heat pump, it is very unobtrusive.
After receiving my activation code online, I entered it in the very easy to use control display, setting the current date and time, the weekly exersize mode and time, etc. I'm certainly no computer wizard, but this was far easier than setting a VCR. If you are capable of heating a muffin in a microwave, then you can set this up.
With my electrician giving me the go-ahead to start, I set the switch from off to manual, which is all that is required to start it. No choke to fuss with or throttle to set. After going through two crank cycles (new propane piping was incompletely purged) it started and ran perfectly. The electrician tested everything and its good to go.
Set the switch to automatic and that's it. Simulate a power failure by turning off your main breaker and after 10 seconds, it starts up, then 5 seconds later the transfer switch automatically does its job and the lights come back on.
Open the hood, then simply lift out the entire front panel of the generator for easy access to battery, oil changes or other maintenance. Automotive spin on oil filter and a built-in oil drain hose will make this a breeze. The oil change intervals are 200 hours or two years. I'll do the initial change after just a couple hours, however.
I'm really very happy with this generator. The first time I opened the hood to look at it I was impressed by several things. The hinges are strong and similar to automotive ones. There are nice quality sound blankets insulating the hood, back and front panels, greatly reducing running noise. The whole inside is as well finished as the outside.
The sound level is acceptable. They claim 68 decibles from 23 feet away. I measured 68 from ten feet to the front, 75 decibles from the right end and 77 from the exhaust end, both at about ten feet. It is loud with hood open, but when closed, you can have a normal conversation with someone right next to it. The machine is air cooled, so there is a fair amount of sound from the internal fan, probably half the sound overall.
It is immediately apparent that Generac takes great pride in their workmanship, from the designers to the builders who assembled it.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Frank Wonderful Product
I had mine installed and what a true pleasure. The local electrician I had hired arrived on time and did a professional job as did the local plummer in hooking up the gas line. Starts every Saturday at 10:00am and runs for 10 minutes.
