Customer Questions & Answers

What does "inverter" mean? How is it different from a standard generator?

Asked by: Anonymous
Inverter based generators have constant output voltage and frequency. And this one is pure sine wave. Normal Generators have an AC dynamo (AC alternator) which generated AC voltage. this AC voltage and its frequency (Hz, cycle per second) depends on the RPM (Revolution per minute) of the driving engine. When load is attached (or changed), the engine tends to become slower and this makes normal gas generators without inverter produce lower frequency (at the time of load change). But the mechanical governor (which is a pretty slow response device) of the driving engine copes with the demanding load and supplies more gas to keep the RPM to the rated number. So, in fluctuating loads we get a very fluctuating voltage and frequency and the output voltage and frequency is not smooth. Low frequency (than rated) is harmful for inductive loads like motor pumps, fans and motor driven power tools. As the frequency gets lower the impedance (can be compared with resistance) of the motor becomes lower which makes the motor draw more than the rated current. This makes the motor hot and can burn it if imposed to lower frequency for prolonged time. That is why you will see in some generator reviews that water pump motor burnt or motor burnt etc due to poor governor or over-rating of the generator. On the other hand, inverter based generators contain a DC Dynamo and DC is like battery power. So, the engine RPM does not affect its frequency (as DC means no frequency). Only the voltage varies depending on RPM. An inverter is then used to generate AC power from the DC. So the output 60Hz remains constant. Inverter is an electronic device which has an 'electronic governor' (PID controller) which is thousand times faster than mechanical governor and copes with the voltage fluctuation within mili-soceonds. So, irrespective of the load (within rated capacity) you'll get smooth and pure constant voltage sine wave with constant frequency. Although the load demand will cause the engine to run slower (or faster) it will not hamper the output of an inverter based generator like its non-inverter based counterpart. I am an engineer and hope this will help a little to understand the subject better.

Will this unit run a portable a/c unit ( 120V 15A)?

Asked by: Anonymous
Depends on the starting current, ac compressor,s have a very hi starting current if they try to re-start in less than 5 min, from last shutdown, the 15 amps rating you talking about i assume, is the receptacle to plug unit into, ( a min of 15 amps) so it must be a small window unit, usually under 8000 watts, if so then this should power it ok, (except on short time restarts) then it would either trip the breaker, are stall the generator..

I am going camping and I want to use my blow dryer which is a Professional 2000 Watt Dryer....will I have difficulties using my dryer?

This will be the first time I will be purchasing a there anything else I need to know before purchasing? Thanks for all your help!
Asked by: Anonymous
As long as nothing else is plugged into it, Should work, a dryer is a resistive load, and comes on slower, but should be no problem, (If it has fresh gas, and a good plug) and not for more 20-30- a time...

Customer Reviews

2,000-Watt Gasoline Powered Inverter Generator is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has all the features I was looking for Purchased this generator for camping. Noise level is great . I can run the microwave, electric coffee pot and hairdryer at the same time. Also, very easy to start with each use. Easy to store in our camper. Just a little heavy in carrying but not bulky. Price was approximately half the price that I was wanting to spend compared to other generators. Very well pleased and happy I have made this purchase. Looking forward to years of use. I also have a whole house 20kw centurion generator. I would certainly recommended both of the generators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product at a great price I was looking for a good quality affordable inverted unit and found this one. I followed the instructions, and it started right up. After a few minutes of idle, I switched to ECO mode and it lowered it's idle. After a few more minutes, I plugged in my devices and everything lit up and worked perfect! I have no complaints. It is not as loud as other units I've heard, nor the quietest either. since it is light weight and portable, I can easily move it to an area that will block and reduce the noise levels. So far, i'm a happy camper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little Generator Bought this for running various items around the house(ie. sump pump, furnace) and as well to run power tools for a renovation at a cabin we have in the bush. I would like to spend a lot of time at the cabin during snowmobile season, I am sure it will work great to run lights and cooking appliances at the cabin as well. Picked this up at a trade show and received a $50 gift card as a bonus. Chose this generator as it is light enough to transport around the farm or to the cabin on a snowmobile or atv.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this little Generator! Love this little Generator. I received the ix2000 model as a gift and was pleasantly urprised. Pulled it right out of the box added the oil which was very easy with the funnel provided.....put in some gas and it fired right up! used it to power the lights, fridge, stereo and microwave in my camping trailer. Brewed some coffee every morning, and hooked up my laptop to watch some movies at night. Great product! Called customer service to register my ix2000 and was greeted with kind, happy, helpful people. High highly recommed this little generator, or any other Generac product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Little power house, but hard to start We were in the bad hurricane force winds of July 2012 storms; hit twice, without power for over eight days (and only a mere 1/2 block from the staging center for MonPower's power restoration). Luckily I had this as my only way to get any power. It was able to keep my refrigeration running and when the temperatures rose, would switch it back and forth to a small window AC in one room, plus ran my medium size flat screen and small computer to watch some movies (since cable, phone, Net EVERYTHING was out of service). It ran them well, however, it is very hard to restart after running out of gas. Even if you stop it manually to refill, it is hard to restart. It is BRAND NEW, NEW USED before this incident. I've wound up with an extremely sore hand and arm and a couple fingers that are red and raw from pulling the started cord up to 50 times to restart after a refill. On the PLUS side, I timed the running time with the "stopwatch" on my iPod and it ran 4:00:52 (4 hours 52 seconds) with the fridge, 2 fans, small computer and flat screen running off it... so I got longer run times than expected in specs on it. Only had ONE overload (no idea why) the entire week when the AC first engaged (it was a brand new AC I had yet to replace the one in my bedroom with.. so maybe because it was new...) but never did it again over span of 8 days. This may NOT be recommended by manufacturer, so take this advice at own risk: I noticed it seemed rather hot when temps were hitting 100° and I took off the side panel to check air filter (clean as brand new) then left off the panel allow more air flow. It was a little easier to start after doing this and seemed to run a bit cooler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reasonable $ Invested and reliable We own 5 generators. A 10HP 5000 watt Coleman, A 6HP 5000 watt ETQ, A 2000 Watt Champion, A 1500 watt Champion and this 2000 watt inverter Generac and for those times that a quieter generator was needed this worked fine for us on the echo throttle setting. At 25 feet away you can sit and have a conversation without that loudness from the engine and for the price, well it left hundreds in my pocket from the pricing of a Honda or Yamaha Generator.
