Customer Questions & Answers

How many watts is a 400-AMP 120/208 3R NEMA 3R CUL?

Asked by: Manyard
wattage is not applicable to this switch. (ie: you might be thinking the wattage shown on the side of most portable generators) this is simply the transfer switch that senses a power outage and then turns on your standby generator. the switch itself does not generate any electricity. a 400 amp switch just means this is capable of handling a 400 amp load to match larger home setups that have two 200 amp breaker boxes from the utility as is commonly setup. most switches like the 200 amp ones seen more commonly at costco , etc, are for smaller more average homes. watts CAN be calculated from amps, but depends on the type of power, ac or dc? see here: this is handy if you know the amperage of certain items in your home and you want to size a generator to the appliances or items you'd need to run in a blackout, as you can convert and add up all the wattage and then match to "running watts". running watts and start up or peak watts are not the same. many people make this mistake and I wish they would only post the running watts on the generators as it would cut down on confusion.
