Asked by: Kcribbett
Generac's GP5500 portable generator, model number 5945, provides power at 60 Hz. We would recommend ensuring your required loads do not exceed the unit's AC rated output of 5500 watts and VAC amperage rating of 45.8 amps at 120 volts and 22.9 amps at 240 volts. To ensure you are able to acquire the ideal product(s) for your portable power needs, we would recommend working with a certified electrician in your local area. For help locating a certified electrician near you, call us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

Generac's GP5500 portable generator, model number 5945 features an AC rated output of 6500 running watts. We would recommend ensuring any loads you connect to the unit not exceed the output ratings of the 120/240V 30A L14-30R twist lock outlet or the 25-amp 2-pole circuit breaker that protects that particular outlet.

5,500-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 572.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You've come a long way baby! I selected this model based on an immediate need and availability. My previous experience with Generac was with the RV products and it was not good. This model seems well put together, able to take rough handling and starts easily. The electrical performance was a pleasant surprise. The frequency is stable from 1/4 to full load and I wouldn't hesitate to run any appliance with it. The voltage regulator also appears spot on at running load. I hesitate to rate the quality excellent as it has very few hours over the monthly exercise period but I fell confident that it will get the higher rating at the end of next year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great generator, pull start issue This has been a good generator for several years now. This moring however the recoil start (mostly plastic) broke, turning my generator into a 700 dollar hunk of metal. I was able to remove the pull start, and ultimately use a rope to start it, meanwhile my wife got the kids ready for school as i fought with the recoil. When I called Customer service they were incredibly helpful and they are shipping me a new recoil. I would buy this again, but i think the recoil should be upgraded from the factory, its rather frustrating having a 700 dollar generator rendered useless by a 10 dollar plastic part!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product is easy to use. I decided to purchase my Generac after I was without power for four days when Hurricane Matthew hit. Thankfully I have not needed to use it yet, but we do tend to lose power during frequent ice storms. I do start, run and shut down my Generac once a month and am VERY please how easy it is to start with just one hand and it only takes 1-2 pulls on the cord. I'm not looking forward to needing to use my Generac, but I am feeling much more confident about getting through another outage by being able to cook and NOT losing any food in my freezer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Starts and runs great We use it for back-up power and even after sitting for months, it starts on the first pull. During Hurricane Mathew, it powered our house for 7 days before power was restored. While the 5500 is adequate, it's borderline for powering the entire house and we need to watch what we're using at any one time. We have a 1800 sf home plus garage, barn and outbuildings. If I was to purchase it now, I would have gotten the 6500 or slightly larger. However, for emergency back-up it does a great job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very simple to use, easy to move around!! I bought this unit under duress,(our power went out because of storms,my old generator,20 years old, would not start up,,started out with one problem and ended up with 3 problems when the fuel valve broke off in the tank!!!,5 hrs into no electricity!!) The wife sent me to the local Lawn Mower shop to buy a new one(generator). The ''Generac'' came home with me, and we saved our,and our 2 neighbors food.(3 refrigerators and 2 freezers)!!! NICE

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has easily identifying features that are easily accessible to any user. Reliable dependable and durable is why I purchased this product. I truly recommend this product for homeowners that reside in areas like mine that have very frequent blackouts from electric storms or just heavy rain storms that will bring down power lines. It has worked great for me and my family members, my wife and children (over 15) can use it with little or no hassle. Knowing we have a back up generator by Generac brings comfort and relief to me for my family. Thank you for such a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I purchased this product. Three weeks after purchasing the generator, my neighborhood lost power for four days. This product worked great the entire time. It is extremely easy to operate and move around. I was able run my refrigerator, take hot showers, and I was able to do a load of laundry too. In fact, my neighbors blame me for the power loss since it happened shortly after the purchase. I am thrilled I own this product. Everyone should own one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Your product has everything I needed I have only used the generator one time for a few hours. I realize that running 3 extension cords is not the way to go so I have invested in a control panel. My one negative is the required use of multiple oils depending on whether it is for summer or winter use. It seems like you could recommend one oil that would work between the temperatures of 0 degrees and 90 degrees to cover the range of central new york weather.
