Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent investment I haven't had to use it in an emergency yet but I have been using it to make sure that when the time comes it will do what it supposed to. So far it starts easily (in warm weather). I love the way the LP tank sits on back and is easy to move around. The weather is starting to get cooler now and I'm going to change the oil to a lighter weight so it's not hard to start. Also get yourself a Gen tent and you'll be all set . October 15, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Generac LP5500 Power Dial for all functions. Detachable hood for engine maintenance We purchased the Generac LP5500 (made in USA) which is the propane model because we didn't want to deal with gasoline. The Generac portable generator starts right up and is easy to handle and with the GenTent Canopy is a combination that can't be beat (see picture)! Prior to our purchase we checked out all types of covers to keep the Generac dry. Living in Florida and it's environment we purchased a GenTent Safety Canopy from Mark Carpenter (made in USA) - the best way to keep the portable generator safe in wet weather outside with the proper ventilation. Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the LP option over Gas Chose this mainly because I no longer wanted to deal with the problem of gas gumming up my carbs. Liked the ability to store the propane for, well... basically forever where as gas has a shelf life. Also found it far safer to store the propane which is readily available in my area. Glad I made this choice. November 11, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Do Not Buy Buyer beware! Our LP5500 failed to start today after owning it for four months. We 'exercised' the unit for 20 minutes during each of those months. I called Generac customer service and the rep was worse than useless -- she told me to check the air filter and spark plugs. I researched local Generac approved service people and drove to a shop to talk to the repair guys. They told me that around 20% of the regulators on this unit are defective and need replacing -- and it's sudden death when the regulators die. Twenty percent! This is a catastrophic failure rate for a product that people buy because they need reliability. This diagnosis also means we have to pay for round trip delivery of the unit to their shop because we don't own a heavy duty flat bed truck ($60) They also told me that the instructions for starting this unit (printed on the machine) were changed by Generac: instead of a 5 second prime this unit needs 15 to 20 seconds, and instead of two pulls it needs three pulls. Don't you think the Generac rep should have known about the regulator problems as well as the changed starting instructions? We really regret this purchase. We bought it because we wanted a bullet proof back up system in case of a power failure to give us peace of mind. Now we're sucked into the black hole of a poorly built product and, just as bad, a poorly trained customer support system that is worse than useless. August 8, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by What more do you need! This is not my first Generac generator. I have owned a whole house standby unit at a previous home and for four years it never missed a beat. It started the first time and ran sometimes for days. We use to lose the power quite often there, and more than once I was so glad we bought it. This is why it was a no brainer to purchase the LP5500. I have a much smaller home and only a few circuits that I really need in the event of power loss. I wanted an LP unit due to the gas storage issues and what it does to the engines if not kept fresh. You can store propane almost forever. I bought a couple tanks to have on hand. This machine fits the bill perfectly. The first time I pulled the rope after following the start up directions it jumped to life and ran flawlessly. I installed a Generac 6-10 breaker transfer switch along with the outside outlet. This is exactly what I needed. It powers my well pump the kitchen, a bedroom, and one bathroom, as well as two room heaters. Not all at once of course, but as needed, never missing a beat. The bonus is I can use this anywhere at any time for almost anything. It moves around quite easy and is very simple to use as well as work on. Buy this generator. You won't regret it at all. Generac is one name you can truely rely on. November 4, 2014
