We had a Generator panel installed when we built our house in the country so 4 steps to run our house on the lp5500. 1) roll Gen outside 2) plug it in 3) start it up 4) turn on the circuits you need on the gen panel.
The three times we have used it started on the 3rd pull. My wife has started it without help just using the instructions on the top, which makes me feel better traveling etc...
Love the LP- no more worries about draining the carb etc.. and having fuel go bad, or messing with/rebuilding a carb in the dark when you really need the generator.
It meets our needs as occasional users wonderfully.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rosemarie Generac LP5500 Power Dial for all functions. Detachable hood for engine maintenance
We purchased the Generac LP5500 (made in USA) which is the propane model because we didn't want to deal with gasoline. The Generac portable generator starts right up and is easy to handle and with the GenTent Canopy is a combination that can't be beat (see picture)! Prior to our purchase we checked out all types of covers to keep the Generac dry. Living in Florida and it's environment we purchased a GenTent Safety Canopy from Mark Carpenter (made in USA) - the best way to keep the portable generator safe in wet weather outside with the proper ventilation.

I haven't had to use it in an emergency yet but I have been using it to make sure that when the time comes it will do what it supposed to. So far it starts easily (in warm weather). I love the way the LP tank sits on back and is easy to move around. The weather is starting to get cooler now and I'm going to change the oil to a lighter weight so it's not hard to start. Also get yourself a Gen tent and you'll be all set .

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MikeK51 A solid unit
I just bought the LP5500. Set up was easy and the unit started up on the second pull. My connection to my home electrical system is complete, and I just need a loss of power to take advantage of this unit. With the winter we had in the Boston area in 2015, it is a miracle that we did not lose power once, but now I am ready when the power goes out.

Buyer beware! Our LP5500 failed to start today after owning it for four months. We 'exercised' the unit for 20 minutes during each of those months. I called Generac customer service and the rep was worse than useless -- she told me to check the air filter and spark plugs. I researched local Generac approved service people and drove to a shop to talk to the repair guys. They told me that around 20% of the regulators on this unit are defective and need replacing -- and it's sudden death when the regulators die. Twenty percent! This is a catastrophic failure rate for a product that people buy because they need reliability. This diagnosis also means we have to pay for round trip delivery of the unit to their shop because we don't own a heavy duty flat bed truck ($60) They also told me that the instructions for starting this unit (printed on the machine) were changed by Generac: instead of a 5 second prime this unit needs 15 to 20 seconds, and instead of two pulls it needs three pulls. Don't you think the Generac rep should have known about the regulator problems as well as the changed starting instructions? We really regret this purchase. We bought it because we wanted a bullet proof back up system in case of a power failure to give us peace of mind. Now we're sucked into the black hole of a poorly built product and, just as bad, a poorly trained customer support system that is worse than useless.

I was so tired of dealing with old gas. This is the perfect purchase. Easy to start and exactly what I needed.

It is noisy, as people say, even though it has a good size muffler on it. A fairly hard pull is required to get it started. I am not sure the wife is going to be able to start it, if its cold. I went with a propane unit because I did not want to deal with gasoline storage and upkeep. I love the heavy duty wheels on it.

Unit has a nice design, easy to move around. LP is the way to go (no stale gas issues). It's nice to know i have the basiscs covered in case of an emergency.
