Customer Questions & Answers

What cable do I need to feed my circuit breaker box? I have a Generac 6500.

Asked by: JimmyJet46
We do not recommend connecting your portable generator directly to your main panel without the use of a manual transfer switch. Connecting directly to the main panel without a manual transfer switch can cause back feeding, which could damage the generator, damage your home’s main panel, or potentially harm someone servicing the utility lines. Your local certified electrician will be able to appropriately determine the manual transfer switch necessary, as well as the correct size connection cable from your generator to your manual transfer switch. If installing a manual transfer switch is not an option, utilizing an extension cord from an appliance directly to the generator is acceptable as long as the extension cord is properly rated for the amperage and distance you are interested in. If you are looking for a cord to utilize with your 30 amp receptacle and you have a minimum distance of 35 feet, you will want a cord that is rated for 30 amps at 35 feet, or 30 amps at 50 feet, etc, depending on your distance requirements.

The model 5940 is a GP6500 that is Emissions Certified for US 49-State, while model 5946 is a GP6500 that is CARB compliant, which means it is able to be sold in or shipped to California.. These generators have the same features and components. The GP6500 generator is rated for a continuous output of 6500 watts, with a rated amperage of 54.2 amps at 120 volts, or 27.1 amps at 240 volts. This rating is when utilizing both the duplex style and the twist lock style receptacles. You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating. We recommend contacting Home Depot directly for information on availability and shipping costs.

6,500-Watt Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 214.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I have had the pleasure of not having to use my generator that I purchased just over a year ago. However for the first time this summer it was finally used but yet again not by me. During a series of severe weather outbreak a friend of mine last power due to downed trees. I offer my generator to him to help keep his basement from flooding. His intention were just to use it for the sump pump. He ended up running not only the pump, but his freezers, refrigerator, air conditioning units and other things. He used it for 40 hours straight and forgot he was even on a generator until he had to fill it after the first 27 hours of run time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for the price This generator works great and I got it for a great price on sale. I havn't used it much, but it starts right away and seems to have a lot of power. The only complaint I have is that getting the cotter pins in for the wheels is a bit hard how they have them positioned. Other than that the generator seems to be great so far.

The features, durability and quality is second to none , highly recommended this to anyone over any other brand .
