Customer Questions & Answers

Do you need to specify naural gas or propane gas when ordering or will the same generator run on either type of gas?

Asked by: Anonymous
No. However, as it states somewhere in the specs, if you hook up to natural gas, you get 7KW, whereas if you use propane, you get the 8Kw. I don't know why, but a plumber would probably be able to answer that. Or, even have Home Depot inquire about it.

Does this unit have to be installed outside?

Asked by: Anonymous
I don't know. Have never heard of one being inside, because it is air cooled.....but you could always contact a local Generac dealer with that question. We have found that our local dealers are more than happy to answer questions, because they hope to get your business in the future.

Does this turn on automatically when the power fails, or do I have to go out and start it up manually?

Asked by: Anonymous
If you are asking about the 8KW Generac stand-by generator (the one we have)....if you buy a battery (look on-line for type), it will be automatic start. that's what we did, as we don't want to have to be home in order to start it. With the battery, you set a timer-type device in the unit, to do a test start up on the same day /time every week, forever. It runs for 12 minutes...starts up and shuts down by itself. We have had ours for about 3 weeks and the test runs have been perfect....sounds like a lawn mower.....with the battery, the generator will come on automatically whether you are home or not during an outage. We felt it was worth the price of a battery...i'm pretty sure it's the same as a car battery, but check the specs on-line. We got ours at a local Generac dealer, but probably didn't have to....just wanted to be sure we started with a "totally approved " battery. We will buy a back up one to keep on a charger in the basement, as some reviewers said they didn't get the expected life out of their battery....just like car batteries.....Also, if you didn't have the battery, you would have to go out once a week to do the test run.

My house has 100 amp service. I see that the new model comes standard with a 50 amp transfer switch. Will this work or do I need 100 amp switch?

Asked by: JPC64
You won't want to run things like tha A/C or dryer so you won't hook them up and probably won't need more than 50

Customer Reviews

8,000-Watt Air Cooled Automatic Standby Generator with 50 Amp Pre-Wired 10-Circuit Transfer Switch is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great price, pretty good quality Overall a great generator. I only have a couple issues. 1) there was a defective limit switch in the transfer switch which destroyed the coil. The authorized service came out quickly, but it took 3 weeks to get the parts. I would think a little better quality testing would have caught this at the factory. 2.) The manual is out of date. The transfer switch configuration is backwards from what is printed in the manual and doesn't have dual coils as shown in the manual. Again, a little quality control should have caught this. Otherwise, the generator itself started up quickly, runs like a champ, and is pretty quiet. I installed it myself, but I am very experienced in electrical and plumbing. Most should probably hire an authorized service agent to hire as the manual is somewhat technical and installation requires quite a bit of electrical and gas piping knowledge.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Warranty Problem Had a problem with unit 8 months before 2 yr labor warranty expired. Service company has not corrected problem after several visits. Labor warranty expired early November. Generac will not cover labor on my continuing problem even though the problem started prior to expiration of the labor warranty. Service man also says its hard to get Generac to replace parts that could be causing the problem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Generator has a few bugs , install is expensive! I got this generator and was very excited about getting it installed. I purchased it online and received it pretty fast. The generator when installed immediately gave a code. I had to call the repair people in it was covered under warranty but the had to replace a part in the unit and reprogram it as well. This is a new generator are you serious? These generators have issues when starting in cold weather, i got another code for long cranking in the winter months, when i went to start it manually a day latter when the temperature went up it started fine and the red light went green. I talked to the repair tech and he said this was a common problem with these units. This is not good cause what if i need the generator to work in the coldest months. Whats wrong with the manufacture, dont they know people will use this in the cold months, i know the sell the block heater, i inquired about this but apparently it wont solve the issue of the starting as that is related to condensation freezing in the orifice were the fuel sprays. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Generator will cost you a pretty penny to install in some cases as much as you paid for the generator. Also if you are doing the install your self to be eligible for insurance regulations you have to have it ESA approved. I had a licensed electrician install it after searching for the best price, when i called the generac authorized dealers they were asking for some ridiculous amounts to do the electrical work, I hired a local electrician, he charged me $600 to install/ w ESA certification compared to the other generac authorized dealers who were asking $2000 plus ESA certification. Do your shopping around on the install, I had no problems with the gas install as my friend did the gas part and charged me cost of materials. I also poured a concrete pad as i did not want to deal with sinking patio stones in the future. So far i have not needed to use it and hope in the event that i do, it will operated flawlessly, if not i will post to let everyone know.It does come on for its regular maintenance schedule which is a cool feature and make me feel a little more comfortable knowing that it is starting itself from time to time. Also this unit will not run your A/C, especially if you have other circuits used at the same time. If you want your A/C and dryer etc, invest in the 20kw unit.. Install will be the same price regardless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable, great price I shopped around for quite awhile between different generator manufacturers and retailers who sell them and I couldn't find a better deal than this unit at Home Depot. I run mine off of natural gas and since I bought it 6 months ago the power has gone out twice for more than 12 hours. Within seconds of the power going out it started up and powered up my house. With kids at home and the fact I travel for my job I feel a lot better when I leave town especially over winter when it's so cold out. I would recommend buying Generac at Home Depot to anyone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad Luck with this product Unit was doa and a new board had to be installed. We've had nothing but problem with this unit. Of course we are past our two years now and it is broken yet again. Maybe we just got a lemon but I will never buy this brand again

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Little or no quality control Had this generator installed on Jan 15th, 2014. It is now Feb 9th, 2014. Generator started up after installation and ran for maybe 30 seconds and died. Generator won't start up unless you fool around with choke. I don't blame contractor but wish he could get it up and running before I need it. I think the manufacturer shipped out a bad generator and I am the one who has to suffer. I will never buy or recommend a Generac generator to anyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grossly disappointed Like others, I purchased this unit based on reputation. After 8 months, the generator died. It had no hours on it other than the weekly self checks. Several authorized service calls later, it was determined my engine needs to be replaced. (apparently Generac will replace every part, but not replace the whole unit) Now I'm stuck with an inherently defective unit I'll never be able to fully trust. And now I'm without backup as storm season approaches. I wish I could bill Generac for all my time spent arranging service calls. Thanks Generac.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never again Generac I ordered this generator in May 2013 it took 30 days to arrive. I had it installed by a licensed electrician and a licensed gas fitter. The generator ran it's regular cycle for 3 months and has now refused to run. The remote reader that I paid extra for has never worked. Now I am trying to get a service tec. to get it running again. After 3 frustrating weeks the service ted. tells me that Generac will not send him the necessary service information to do the work. They are great things when they work correctly but heaven help you when they break down.
