Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Mark1 Generator has a few bugs , install is expensive!
I got this generator and was very excited about getting it installed. I purchased it online and received it pretty fast.
The generator when installed immediately gave a code. I had to call the repair people in it was covered under warranty but the had to replace a part in the unit and reprogram it as well. This is a new generator are you serious?
These generators have issues when starting in cold weather, i got another code for long cranking in the winter months, when i went to start it manually a day latter when the temperature went up it started fine and the red light went green. I talked to the repair tech and he said this was a common problem with these units. This is not good cause what if i need the generator to work in the coldest months. Whats wrong with the manufacture, dont they know people will use this in the cold months, i know the sell the block heater, i inquired about this but apparently it wont solve the issue of the starting as that is related to condensation freezing in the orifice were the fuel sprays.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Generator will cost you a pretty penny to install in some cases as much as you paid for the generator. Also if you are doing the install your self to be eligible for insurance regulations you have to have it ESA approved.
I had a licensed electrician install it after searching for the best price, when i called the generac authorized dealers they were asking for some ridiculous amounts to do the electrical work, I hired a local electrician, he charged me $600 to install/ w ESA certification compared to the other generac authorized dealers who were asking $2000 plus ESA certification.
Do your shopping around on the install, I had no problems with the gas install as my friend did the gas part and charged me cost of materials. I also poured a concrete pad as i did not want to deal with sinking patio stones in the future.
So far i have not needed to use it and hope in the event that i do, it will operated flawlessly, if not i will post to let everyone know.It does come on for its regular maintenance schedule which is a cool feature and make me feel a little more comfortable knowing that it is starting itself from time to time.
Also this unit will not run your A/C, especially if you have other circuits used at the same time. If you want your A/C and dryer etc, invest in the 20kw unit.. Install will be the same price regardless.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by bigbl5 Great price, pretty good quality
Overall a great generator. I only have a couple issues. 1) there was a defective limit switch in the transfer switch which destroyed the coil. The authorized service came out quickly, but it took 3 weeks to get the parts. I would think a little better quality testing would have caught this at the factory. 2.) The manual is out of date. The transfer switch configuration is backwards from what is printed in the manual and doesn't have dual coils as shown in the manual. Again, a little quality control should have caught this. Otherwise, the generator itself started up quickly, runs like a champ, and is pretty quiet. I installed it myself, but I am very experienced in electrical and plumbing. Most should probably hire an authorized service agent to hire as the manual is somewhat technical and installation requires quite a bit of electrical and gas piping knowledge.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by kentonmi This is well designed from product to installation instructions.
This unit comes with just about every thing needed for a successful installation. I only needed one 240 volt circuit breakers for my existing service panel, gas valve, gas pipe and fittings. I needed one pipe cut and threaded. Everything was available at Home Depot.
Following the installation guide was easy, it is set up so you can do as much or as little as you want to at a time.
When installation was complete, I went on Genrac's web site to get the activation code. I entered the code into the controller and followed the on screen prompts. Everything works perfectly and I can't wait for the next power outage!

I finally got this generator up and running, now I can't wait to lose power. We generally lose power on average once a month due to squirrels eating lines and blowing transformers. In addition to that, we lose power for an extended amount of time usually 2 times a year because of ice storms or high straight line winds.
The installation was pretty straightforward so I'm told, I had an electrician do it. I also had a plumber do the gas line. Could've probably done the gas myself, but it was worth hiring someone to make sure it was done correctly.
About 70% of the house is covered, the things that I figure must have--refridge, freezer, furnace, microwave, Xbox, etc.
What wasn't apparent to me before now was that I was getting another circuit breaker box, that's what the included transfer switch really is. So it's a bonus, I now have plenty of additional switches and circuits for when I want to add stuff like a hot tub, room additions, etc.

Please consider our experience before purchasing an 8KW Generac 5870:
I am a retired electrical contractor and am quite familiar with generator systems.
Installed July 2011. Battery failed and was replaced battery in early August. New battery failed end of August: we contacted Generac. Diagnosed as defective control panel. It took 1½ months more - October 15 - before new panel was installed. We then purchased a 3rd new battery (originally, the generator did not come with one).
Early 2012, generator engine taking longer to start while cranking. Engine failed to start end of February: reported to Generac. Observed that it would start - after extended cranking - if air inlet on the air-box is covered with my hand. Accidently discovered that engine would start immediately if a "factory hole" in the air-box was sealed off. Generac replaced the air-box, end of April 2012. Engine still failed to start unless "factory hole" in new air-box sealed off.
Generac suspected LP gas supply issue: inspected & tested OK per Gas Co. on May 6 (they performed original installation). Engine completely failed to start July 2 - reported to Generac. Further calls & emails to Generac not returned for 2 weeks, then received call that Generac will replace fuel regulator. Again calls or emails to Generac not returned: finally after 25 more days regulator replaced: August 7- issue resolved!
August 8: "Inspect Battery" flashing on control panel display. September 1, battery dead: reported to Generac that charger in control panel again failed. October 3, per Generac Customer Service: "The Service VP and the Sales VP - both are having further discussions regarding whether or not to issue the swap (a new control panel)". Generac would not return my phone calls or emails for nearly 60 days. From my September 1, request for warranty repair, it wasn’t until December 28, 2012 that the issue was resolved and the generator repaired (2nd replacement of failed control panel). And only after repeatedly emailing Generac’s CEO. Of the 17 months that this generator has been in service, it had functioned properly for less than 3 months.
Since this time the unit has been functioning except for 2 incidences of blown fuses in the transfer panel. Additionally, fairly often, the unit will fail to start during cranking, displaying an “overspeed” error message. It will then not start again until display is reset. So if this happens while you are away from home, say goodbye to the contents of your freezer.
Difficult to believe that I had to go through all this downtime and experience Generac’s blatant unprofessionalism and incompetence . . . for EACH failure occurrence! There is simply no justification for it. Believe me, you do NOT want to purchase a Generac.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by lmkc Warranty Problem
Had a problem with unit 8 months before 2 yr labor warranty expired. Service company has not corrected problem after several visits. Labor warranty expired early November. Generac will not cover labor on my continuing problem even though the problem started prior to expiration of the labor warranty. Service man also says its hard to get Generac to replace parts that could be causing the problem.

Had this generator installed on Jan 15th, 2014. It is now Feb 9th, 2014. Generator started up after installation and ran for maybe 30 seconds and died. Generator won't start up unless you fool around with choke. I don't blame contractor but wish he could get it up and running before I need it. I think the manufacturer shipped out a bad generator and I am the one who has to suffer. I will never buy or recommend a Generac generator to anyone.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by bsmith Do NOT buy a generac generator
We installed our 8kW generac in 2010 and it has had one very serious problem after another. Every component has been replaced at least once either through recalls or through failures. Literally the only "part" of the generac that has not been replaced is the outside case. This unit has sat for months at a time while waiting for repair. The engine was replaced, under warranty, and now the new engine now burns through most of the oil during ONE 10 minute "exercise". When we try to run it the engine smokes severely because it is burning so much oil. We have been waiting 3 weeks for the repair guy but the dispatcher said they are overwhelmed with generac repairs and he doesn't know yet when he can get to us.
