Overall a great generator. I only have a couple issues. 1) there was a defective limit switch in the transfer switch which destroyed the coil. The authorized service came out quickly, but it took 3 weeks to get the parts. I would think a little better quality testing would have caught this at the factory. 2.) The manual is out of date. The transfer switch configuration is backwards from what is printed in the manual and doesn't have dual coils as shown in the manual. Again, a little quality control should have caught this. Otherwise, the generator itself started up quickly, runs like a champ, and is pretty quiet. I installed it myself, but I am very experienced in electrical and plumbing. Most should probably hire an authorized service agent to hire as the manual is somewhat technical and installation requires quite a bit of electrical and gas piping knowledge.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by kentonmi This is well designed from product to installation instructions.
This unit comes with just about every thing needed for a successful installation. I only needed one 240 volt circuit breakers for my existing service panel, gas valve, gas pipe and fittings. I needed one pipe cut and threaded. Everything was available at Home Depot.
Following the installation guide was easy, it is set up so you can do as much or as little as you want to at a time.
When installation was complete, I went on Genrac's web site to get the activation code. I entered the code into the controller and followed the on screen prompts. Everything works perfectly and I can't wait for the next power outage!

I finally got this generator up and running, now I can't wait to lose power. We generally lose power on average once a month due to squirrels eating lines and blowing transformers. In addition to that, we lose power for an extended amount of time usually 2 times a year because of ice storms or high straight line winds.
The installation was pretty straightforward so I'm told, I had an electrician do it. I also had a plumber do the gas line. Could've probably done the gas myself, but it was worth hiring someone to make sure it was done correctly.
About 70% of the house is covered, the things that I figure must have--refridge, freezer, furnace, microwave, Xbox, etc.
What wasn't apparent to me before now was that I was getting another circuit breaker box, that's what the included transfer switch really is. So it's a bonus, I now have plenty of additional switches and circuits for when I want to add stuff like a hot tub, room additions, etc.

Please consider our experience before purchasing an 8KW Generac 5870:
I am a retired electrical contractor and am quite familiar with generator systems.
Installed July 2011. Battery failed and was replaced battery in early August. New battery failed end of August: we contacted Generac. Diagnosed as defective control panel. It took 1½ months more - October 15 - before new panel was installed. We then purchased a 3rd new battery (originally, the generator did not come with one).
Early 2012, generator engine taking longer to start while cranking. Engine failed to start end of February: reported to Generac. Observed that it would start - after extended cranking - if air inlet on the air-box is covered with my hand. Accidently discovered that engine would start immediately if a "factory hole" in the air-box was sealed off. Generac replaced the air-box, end of April 2012. Engine still failed to start unless "factory hole" in new air-box sealed off.
Generac suspected LP gas supply issue: inspected & tested OK per Gas Co. on May 6 (they performed original installation). Engine completely failed to start July 2 - reported to Generac. Further calls & emails to Generac not returned for 2 weeks, then received call that Generac will replace fuel regulator. Again calls or emails to Generac not returned: finally after 25 more days regulator replaced: August 7- issue resolved!
August 8: "Inspect Battery" flashing on control panel display. September 1, battery dead: reported to Generac that charger in control panel again failed. October 3, per Generac Customer Service: "The Service VP and the Sales VP - both are having further discussions regarding whether or not to issue the swap (a new control panel)". Generac would not return my phone calls or emails for nearly 60 days. From my September 1, request for warranty repair, it wasnât until December 28, 2012 that the issue was resolved and the generator repaired (2nd replacement of failed control panel). And only after repeatedly emailing Generacâs CEO. Of the 17 months that this generator has been in service, it had functioned properly for less than 3 months.
Since this time the unit has been functioning except for 2 incidences of blown fuses in the transfer panel. Additionally, fairly often, the unit will fail to start during cranking, displaying an âoverspeedâ error message. It will then not start again until display is reset. So if this happens while you are away from home, say goodbye to the contents of your freezer.
Difficult to believe that I had to go through all this downtime and experience Generacâs blatant unprofessionalism and incompetence . . . for EACH failure occurrence! There is simply no justification for it. Believe me, you do NOT want to purchase a Generac.

Rated 1 out of 5Â by Roybowlake Never again Generac
I ordered this generator in May 2013 it took 30 days to arrive. I had it installed by a licensed electrician and a licensed gas fitter. The generator ran it's regular cycle for 3 months and has now refused to run. The remote reader that I paid extra for has never worked. Now I am trying to get a service tec. to get it running again. After 3 frustrating weeks the service ted. tells me that Generac will not send him the necessary service information to do the work.
They are great things when they work correctly but heaven help you when they break down.
