Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Peace of mind We waited a long time evaluating generators and reading reviews. We finally settled on the Generac XG 8000 as it has a full pressure oil system with a spin on oil filter. It's not the crankshaft just dipping into the oil on each turn so it should provide us with long service. The fact it's made here in the USA is another big plus for me! We tested the generator and we can run quite a few things: boiler, TV, refrigerator, all sorts of light, 220Volt well pump etc. There was an immediate sense of relief knowing we would have power during an emergency. We added the Reliance 30 AMP power inlet box, along with a vinyl surface mounting block (found in the siding section) both from Home Depot). The block is intended for adding an outdoor outlet if your siding was already installed. I simply drilled it and mounted the power inlet box with a small line of outdoor silicon caulking on three sides behind the power inlet box leaving the bottom open for any moisture to escape, and a small section of plastic conduit to get me inside the wall. Lastly we added a reliance power cord to connect it to the home. Don't forget to install a transfer switch or in our case a manual interlock to keep from back feeding power outside the home when on generator power. We exercise the generator on the first of the month for 30 minutes, and love hearing it run!!! June 10, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor customer service Very poor customer service. I purchased this unit as a back up power supply in 2012. The problem I and others have had is with the battery and charger. First of all the battery does not charge when the unit is running. This I knew, but still think it should recharge it's self when running. So what they want you to do to keep the battery charged is to plug it in for a day or two each month. So over the past year I have been doing as they said plugging in the charger for one or two days a month to keep the battery charged. Well when I went to start it last week the battery was dead. So I call customer service and they gave me a dealer to take it to. Now to get the battery out you need to drain and remove the fuel tank, remove the side panel of the frame just to get to it. This is insane, most have a battery tray in the open where you can get to it with out removing anything. They told me the charger was bad and so was the battery. After doing some searching on the net I found out a lot of these had bad chargers. There are no lights on the charger to tell you if it charging or not, no meter on the unit to show the charge left in the battery. So my battery went bad because the charger never worked and I had no way of telling it was not working. The dealer told me Generac would replace the charger but not the battery. So I called there joke of a customer service line and was told if the factory told the dealer they were not going to cover the battery there was nothing they could do. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold only to have the same guy come back on and start asking me for information so he could sent it to a dispute resolution specialist who would call me the next day. Well two days have passed, no call, no e-mail. I think you will be better off with another brand. I would not buy another Generac product. April 30, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent generator Saved my money for a year to purchase this as an emergency backup plan in case of storms and blizzards here in Michigan. Solid tough heavy huge gas tank ample watts to run furnace blower fridge freezer garage door. Very pleased indeed. Have two toddlers and in a power outage they will stay warm and eat hot food. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Thank you Generac and the Peoples Republic of China Bought this generator before Christmas. Ran it twice for 2 hours each time during brief power outages without any problem. A severe thunderstorm came through and we have been and will be without power for at least a week--roads closed, thousands of trees and power poles down. Started the generator and over the course of the next 22 hours, I noticed that the choke vibrated out (an obvious design defect), unit ran very hot to the point of boiling the oil and finally would not run under any load whatsoever. After some self-diagnosis (I am not unfamiliar with small engines), I quickly came to find that the problem was a stuck intake valve, which unbelievably is listed as # 11 under "engine runs rough" in the troubleshooting guide. So Generac is aware of this problem which is clearly another design defect. It is interesting to note that while the generator portion of this unit is "Made in the USA" the engine is made in the Peoples Republic of China. Enough said on that point. The result of the stuck valve was that for several hours the unit was running very rich which meant (1) it was guzzling gas, (2) it was overheating, (3) the paint burned off the back of the muffler, (4) the spark arrestor was clogged by carbon, and (5) the oil was black as coal. In the middle of a massive and prolonged blackout, I do not need to schlep a brand new generator back to the store and wait for it to be repaired, even if it did not suffer any permanent damage. Meanwhile, I'm sweating, my food has spoiled all of which I spent $1500 to prevent. Thank you Generac and the Peoples Republic of China. July 15, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So far, so good I was looking for a portable generator for emergency power situations. I chose this one over other similarly sized, lesser priced generators due primarily to the full pressure lubrication engine. If I end up having to run this thing 18-20 hours a day for a week or more, I feel better having full lube over splash lube. It was a pretty considerable difference in price. I also purchased it with the intention of converting it to run on natural gas using a conversion kit. Based on past experience, I'd rather not stockpile gasoline or deal with long lines after a hurricane. I ordered online, and chose free delivery to my home. After ordering, I realized I probably should have had it shipped to my work, thinking the driver wouldn't be able to get to my house with a semi-truck with trailer. Wrong. He ignored the "no trucks" sign to get into the neighborhood, and parked on the street, then used his pallet jack to bring the generator from the street to my carport. Not sure how he got out of the neighborhood, but apparently he didn't have any problems. Two thumbs up for delivery. Out of the box, everything appeared to be in good order and was easy to assemble. The frame appeared to be very sturdy and well built. A few days later, I filled it up with non-ethanol gasoline and ran it with a small load. It started right up on the first push of the button. I then installed the tri-fuel conversion kit (purchased separately). I ran the generator one more time with a couple gallons of non-ethanol gasoline just to make sure it would run on gasoline with the tri-fuel kit installed. No problems. That may be the last time I run it on gasoline. I hooked it up to my natural gas supply and it cranked right up. I ran it with a load (3 window air conditioners, 2 refrigerators, 6 ceiling fans, lights, tvs, internet router, and other misc items) for a couple hours, no problems. According to the power meter, I still had plenty of power in reserve. It won't run my whole house - central a/c, oven, etc - but I should be able to live comfortably as long as needed. It's much easier for me to justify a $2k system vs a $10k whole home standby system. I put just under 15 hours on the generator, and chose to change the oil at that point. There were what appeared to be some shavings in the oil. I used the generac oil filter and briggs SAE30 oil. I plan to change it again at around 50 hours and begin using a good synthetic and gold filter at that point. I'm pretty particular, and did notice some "flaws". Both the battery and spark plug appear to be hard to access - they are not visible. Apparently, even though this engine is made in the USA, parts are not readily available. IMO, a carb kit should be easy to find for this engine; I don't even think they make one. That's a big deal if you're running this thing on gasoline. I feel better running it on NG. Also, at this price point, it would have been nice to have "clean" power for computers, tvs, etc, and even though I don't really need it, an idle down feature. I haven't had any problems with the battery, but apparently it doesn't charge itself while the engine is running. Not sure how common that is for generators, but it does come with a trickle charger, which I haven't used yet. Time will truly tell if it was worth the money spent, but after 15 hours of break-in use, I'm pleased with my purchase. Hopefully this thing will only come out of the garage a couple times a year for maintenance, and I'll never find out if it was worth the money. July 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Generator I received this generator with no problems after or during shipping. Added the oil and attached the tires and front brace. Fill the gas tank, pulled the choke out and hit the start button and on the second push it started up and ran for an hour with NO problems. Everything on the unit worked as it should! I highly recommend this model!!!!! April 30, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by XG8000E Easy to put together but the choke if fully extended will not work. The engine will not start. You have to pull the choke only 90% out but then it starts immediately. The starter battery must be charged by its electrical 12 volt adapter and does not charge while the generator is running. This is a drawback to me. You have to keep it charged in between generator tests or uses. The generator runs smoothly with little vibration and the noise level is not bad. July 24, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Runs great once you get it started Generator delivery and purchase was easy through Home Depot. The generator was difficult to start. I followed the starting instructions on top of it after assembling it and fueling it. It would not fire up with the choke pulled all the way out. After about 30 minutes of checking all the connections I finally decided to try to start it with the choke pushed in and it fired right up. Since then I have not had any problems. Handles my entire house load during power outages. May 15, 2013
