Rated 5 out of 5Â by Rosemarie Generac LP5500 Power Dial for all functions. Detachable hood for engine maintenance
We purchased the Generac LP5500 (made in USA) which is the propane model because we didn't want to deal with gasoline. The Generac portable generator starts right up and is easy to handle and with the GenTent Canopy is a combination that can't be beat (see picture)! Prior to our purchase we checked out all types of covers to keep the Generac dry. Living in Florida and it's environment we purchased a GenTent Safety Canopy from Mark Carpenter (made in USA) - the best way to keep the portable generator safe in wet weather outside with the proper ventilation.

Buyer beware! Our LP5500 failed to start today after owning it for four months. We 'exercised' the unit for 20 minutes during each of those months. I called Generac customer service and the rep was worse than useless -- she told me to check the air filter and spark plugs. I researched local Generac approved service people and drove to a shop to talk to the repair guys. They told me that around 20% of the regulators on this unit are defective and need replacing -- and it's sudden death when the regulators die. Twenty percent! This is a catastrophic failure rate for a product that people buy because they need reliability. This diagnosis also means we have to pay for round trip delivery of the unit to their shop because we don't own a heavy duty flat bed truck ($60) They also told me that the instructions for starting this unit (printed on the machine) were changed by Generac: instead of a 5 second prime this unit needs 15 to 20 seconds, and instead of two pulls it needs three pulls. Don't you think the Generac rep should have known about the regulator problems as well as the changed starting instructions? We really regret this purchase. We bought it because we wanted a bullet proof back up system in case of a power failure to give us peace of mind. Now we're sucked into the black hole of a poorly built product and, just as bad, a poorly trained customer support system that is worse than useless.

When my old generator failed once again when I needed it. I decided to get rid of it and go for something more dependable. So I did a little research by asking people I knew if they owned a generator and if so what kind they owned and what was their opinion of it. A couple of these owned a Generac. The Generac owners were very happy with their generators and have not had any problems what so ever. The others who owns other brands. have experienced the similar problems that I had. After when it sits for and extended period of four mounts or more, they have trouble starting them or what ticked me off the most was when I go to use it during a power failure, and I would open the gas valve to the tank, gas would flow right out the bottom of the carburetor because the seals and diaphragm would have gone bad even though I have always added a stabilizer and ethanol treatment to all the gasoline that is used in my small engine equipment. Once I found out what I now believe to be the best generator. I went online at generac .com to see what was available, I discovered the LP powered model and I knew just what I would buy. After checking locally I found that the local hardware store had this model on sale. Another bonus. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it started the first time it was started and how quite it was compared to my old generator. I am very happy with purchase and would Highly recommend this product. The only negative I found is that is a little difficult to push over a gravel drive. but is not difficult to pull over gravel as it has an excellent handle system to maneuver it.

Was very easy to put together. Once i hooked up propane bottle, it took two pulls and the unit fired right up.
I was worried about servicing this unit, but lookin at it , it will be very eay to change the oil and air filter. Alot of other units i look at you would have to lay on your back to do.

We lost power for 10 days after Hurricane Sandy. After Sandy there were a few other smaller storms that resulted in extended power outages over the next two years. We were tired of living without power, hot water and tossing-out thawed food that became bad when the fridge/freezer went down. I wanted to but a generator but did not want a gas powered unit. After some research I settled on the Generac LP5500. I bought the generator with a junction switch box and a 40 lbs propane tank. I have used the generator three times since April of this year. I do a monthly PM of the generator and keep it clean and in good shape. It is always ready to go and is up and running in less than five minutes after the power is out. The generator is easy to start and is usually running after the 2nd pull of the starter pull cord. The LP system is better than the gas model and I do not have to worry about storing fresh gas or adding gas preservatives to tanks. The unit is well built and very sturdy. I have great confidence in the Generac LP5500 and it has become a valued asset during power outages.
