Questions & Answers

Should the amperage of the automatic switch equal or exceed the home service amperage?

Asked by: Whizzer
The EZ Switches are designed to be installed as a subpanel, and the circuits deemed necessary to power during an outage will be moved from the main distribution panel into the automatic transfer switch. This transfer switch will not meet or exceed your incoming service to the home, but will be sized for the number of circuits deemed necessary to back up. If a transfer switch is desired that could potentially back up an entire home, the transfer switch needs to meet or exceed your incoming utility service, and may be required to include a service disconnect depending on where it is installed within your home’s electrical system. We recommend contacting your local certified electrician or inspector for restrictions or sizing requirements if using the transfer switch as your service disconnect. In the event that the transfer switch will be used to power a subpanel, the transfer switch must meet or exceed the rating of the subpanel. The transfer switch rating should never be less than the amperage rating that is being fed through the switch. We recommend contacting a certified installer or certified electrician for sizing assistance.
