The only reason to consider a doweling jig is if you are trying for better quality joints. Unfortunately this item is not the answer. There is too much slop in the bushings to drill accurately. Holes can be 1/16" off resulting in lots of unnecessary sanding. The clamp can also mar your wood.
Spend more for a better tool and/or use a different type of joint (dado, rabbet).

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Gnome Drill Stops not square & set screw comes out
I purchase for some furniture repair the alignment mechanism is good. However the drill stops do not mount square to the drill bit and the set screw comes out of the stop before it reaches the drill bit.
Eve it you mount it on the recessed flute the stop isn't square. The stop needs to be longer to keep it square to the drill bit. See attached pic top is General #841 and lower is an old Craftsman / General bit and drill stop.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by JADA EZ dowel joining jig
I purchased the EZ Dowel joining jig for a one time table making project. Since the purchase I have used this particular jig on over a dozen projects. Limited room in my shop requires more portable type tools and this is great for ALL doweling projects. The Jig itself is built of quality materials, as well as the incluced bits. They stay sharp even with continous use with Red Oak though I have replaced the 5/16" bit due to so much use . probally have drilled 600 dowels with this product and its as good as it was new. Great for the DYI or someone with limited shop room. You just need a strong level work surface to attach to and your ready to go.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Speedy Perfect for Small Projects
This dowel jig is perfect for small projects where you need half a dozen or less holes drilled. Does it get the job done? Yes. Is it for a serious woodworker? No.
I used it to modify two drawers on a vanity to accommodate a vessel sink drain where I had to shorten the depth of the drawers by three inches. The kit made the mod easy and affordable for a one time project. The precision of this tool enough for most basic DIY projects but if you were building and installing custom cabinets then I would suggest a much higher priced tool/kit.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by RASTL Can marr up work - drill bit not true.
The kit is nice in that you are provided everything you need to get going - jig, bits, stops, markers and dowels. The jig is fairly well made, but beware of rough areas (specifically where the bushings thread into the jig's body) that can quickly marr up your work piece. Also, the alignment gauge on the jig doesn't seem to be exactly on center, so I would recommend drilling holes in one piece and then using the marking pins for alignment rather than trusting pencil marks. A last complaint is that one of the bits is not true - it's not by much, but it's noticeable.
Overall, I've been able to make acceptable dowel joints and haven't ruined any material due to the kit's short comings.

Warning... This is NOT an accurate tool. Holes are consistently 1/16 off. This is a deal killer. Dont buy it!!!

Can't say how it works as it was broken out of the package, The lock bolt was stripped in the aluminum clamp. A few turns and it jammed, then the plastic knob broke off. Given tht the lock bolt relies on the strength of the threads in the aluminum - even a working unit would not be long for the world. Also - I drove 15 extra miles to a HD for a tool listed in stock online - that was not the case which is how I got this junk in the first place.
