I used the General Tools #1265 snap fastener kit to repair an outdoor folding chair carry bag which had a broken zipper. The General Tools kit is Made in the USA and of superior quality compared to the foreign made kit I originally tried. The instructions included with the #1265 show using the same side of the anvil for setting both the button/socket and the eyelet/stud. Use the concave side of the anvil to set the button/socket fastener. I put the anvil on a concrete floor when setting the fasteners. Tap the flaring tool until the fastener no longer turns (6-8 times in my case).

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Patrick OUTSTANDING repair!
Local cleaners damaged snap button on front of well known brand of overalls. The flap would not stay in the "down" position and I certainly wasn't going to throw the entire set in the garbage. While perusing the HD site, came upon this kit. Also watched a video on YT and it looked so simple.
So off to HD, bought the kit for $4.86, enough to fix 6 snap buttons. Man, was this a "SNAP" to fix! Start to finish was about 15 minutes and for an old man (78) including the cleanup, wasn't bad at all. And now, the flap always stays down, especially when I want it to! Have 5 more repairs that can be done!

I needed to replace snaps on my boat cushions and did not want to spend a ton on a tool and snaps from that marine store.
The reviews were great on the product and price is less than five bucks.
You will need a hammer and in my case I had to rig up a stable surface usin a short piece of 2 by 4 and a crescent wrench. The kit comes with no instructions but basically you take the round jig that come with it and place the button head in the jig and thread the neck through the hole next put the snap over the neck and the other piece is the tap, which also comes in the pack.
Thake the tap and insert in the neck and hammer away. The neck mushrooms which closes down on the snap...the tighter the better...keep hammering until you get the discredit results as it with net damage the jig or tab. I just did four in ten minutes
