It's actually very simple the belt drive runs on a gear that greatly reduces the sound from what you would get from a chain and sprocket Gear set, but it's the same principal just like a bicycle chain works.

The belt drive works just like the chain drive. The advantage is the quiet operation. The belt is easy to adjust to the correct tension. Like a chain, it has to be adjusted about one month after installation. It will stretch a little just like the chain does.

If you are familiar with the old chain drive openers, this is conceptually very similar. A cogged, reinforced rubber belt runs around pulleys at either end of the track. One pulley is powered and controlled by the drive motor in the power head unit, the other pulley at the far end is passive and is simply adjusted to keep the belt under the correct tension. The belt is connected to the carrier that has the lever that connects to the garage door at two pivot points. The belt is reinforced and not unlike the rubber belts used inside OHC car engines (typically small displacement 4-cylinder models, e.g. Honda) and those are very durable (lasting up to 100,000 miles before due for replacement). Thus I am very confident this technology could last in a garage opener for decades.
The advantage over the belt over a chain is that it is very quiet, and there are no metal parts to corrode or require periodic lubrication. The belt is typically enclosed inside (under) the track, so it stays clean and does not collect dust and dirt like an exposed chain. Read Less

The belt drive works the same as the chain drive garage door openers. When installing the opener, there is a tension bolt & pulley system the you need to adjust. One more thing, it is really quite. If you're in the anywhere in the house, you can't here it open or close unless you're at the garage door to the house.

The belt is driven by a gear in the power head. The belt has gear teeth that match the power head gear. At the door end, the belt pivots on a matching gear. The belt has a device that is attached to the door which is what moves the door up and down as the belt moves back and forth. A very quiet operation that has been trouble free. I highly recommend this opener.

Out of the box it will work for a 7 foot door. For an 8 foot door, you will need an extension kit which is sold separately. Or, if you don't mind having the door not quite open all the way (i.e. about a foot short of all the way open), you can use it as it comes without the extension kit.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 310 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by An installation tip Yes it's much quieter than the old screw drive. I have one that has been trouble-free for over a year now. It went up easily, I love it. During installation of a second unit, I discovered there is a hole in the cover, right beneath the hanger slot. You should put a piece of tape over that! I dropped a bolt into it and had to disassemble the cover to retrieve it from under the circuit board. The cover is easy to remove, just two screws and it slides off, but the screws have to be removed from the bottom which is awkward when the unit hasn't been hung yet and you're supporting the motor in your hands... Then you need to be careful not to pull on the electrical wires inside. April 28, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Review of Genie Silentmax 1000 3/4 HPC Garage Door Opener I was pleased with the installation and set up, but I recommend watching setup videos of it on the Internet in addition to viewing the instructions before starting. I also especially like the gradual starts and stops of the DC drive system which makes setting the travel limits easy, and eliminates all jerking and jolts in the operation. The door opener box I purchased was short one remote controller, but when I showed Home Depot Service the sealed bag containing the controllers from the purchase with only one controller in it, and the portion of the box, and the specification that pictured and said "two controllers", they gave me another controller, no problem. I liked that too. I'm using GE LED 5000K 60 W equivalent bulbs, and the range of the remote controllers isn't reduced any, as far as I can tell. The range is just a little better than my previous controller. I like the ability to also manually turn on and off the lights. I use it to give extra light in the garage when I'm looking in certain parts of it, and also turning off the lights when I'm leaving the garage. June 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A good opener It was simple to install. I used the existing ceiling mount but had to change the height of the wall anchor above the door from my old model. The remotes were pre-programmed, work out of the box. The wall mount keyboard opener needed to be programmed (the instructions with all the flashing LED-s are a little confusing). The opener works great, and is very quiet (I have it now for one month). May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very easy install and setup (very quiet as well) Previously owned a Genie screw drive and it was getting to its last bit of life. Decided to go with the belt drive this time around. Much quieter running. Not quite as fast on open as the Excelerator screw drive was, but still gets the job done. I really like it. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This one should last longer than I do! To be honest, I watched a professional install it. This opener replaced a 30 year old unit that was so noisy the neighbors complained. This unit is so quiet that the neighbors don't know when I'm coming or going. Delighted with my state-of-the-art garage door opener! May 24, 2016
