Customer Questions & Answers

replacing lock

We moved into a house with one of these mailboxes, but the lock is broken. Are the locks replacable? I don't want to replace the mailbox.

Is the slot big enough for someone's hand to reach in to steal mail?

Asked by: LucieL
No, but it doesn't matter because a thief can easily pry the box open in a just a few seconds with a screw driver, as happened to us.

How does the postmaster collect outgoing mail?

Asked by: tiffany
Very carefully. There is a clip on the inside of the lid, but it doesn't secure the mail - the mail sort of balances there. If mail person lets the lid go past level, the mail will fall out on the ground & he/she will have to get out of the truck.

Does the postal carrier have a key to be able to open to put in small packages?

Asked by: mlm
No, the postal carrier can only stuff packages through the opening. But I would not accept any mail or packages of value in this unit, as it is not secure. Thieves pried open ours in a few seconds using a screw driver, along with every one like it down our street.

Wyngate Locking Post-Mount Mailbox in White is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible - Thieves Popped it open in 5 seconds Thieves came through our neighborhood and easily pried open a half dozen of these along our street, including ours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality If you are happy with minimum security, this mailbox is much more sturdy than the lower cost Gibraltar mailbox. Its baked on finish should protect from rust for a long time. The magnetic latching of the door is very smooth compared to the usual mailbox spring latch. The security is marginal, as it will be for all similar shaped post mailboxes. The mail entry is to USPS standards so a small hand or any grabbing device can remove the mail. Brutal mechanical attack is also possible. If you want real security, find something else. If you want deterrence, this is probably OK. I just installed six in a row for neighbors. Half have chosen not to use the locking feature on a street where mailbox theft is common. Most here use a box in the post office for any mail of value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done This was the only box I could find narrow enough to fit on the post that I share with my neighbor's mailbox. I bought it at a Home Depot store. My keys are metal. I suppose they could break, but it would have to be pretty difficult. As far as the slot goes, someone with a small hand could put it in, but it would take some doing and patience to get the mail out. Anything much narrower and magazines and such that need to fold to be put in would not fit. I'm sure someone with a crowbar could break the lock, but hopefully this will be a good deterrent. Time will tell.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not secure enough The slot on this mailbox is big enough for someone to reach in and take your mail. I had to modify this box myself to make it more secure. The size is ample but the overall security needs a design revision.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BIG ol Mailbox This mailbox is a lot bigger than a standard one. Make sure your post can handle it with out it looking like an umbrella.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh. The clip that holds the outgoing mail doesn't secure it while you unlock box & get the incoming stack. If the clip/lid isn't kept level all the outgoing mail will just fall out. On a typical trip to the box you have to juggle both outgoing & incoming stacks and a key. - but don't think that the key can be wedged between the outgoing clip/lid & inner lock box lid while trying to keep the outgoing clip/lid level, because the key will break off in the lock & you will have to fish it out. (1st use) Can't use a magnet to get it, because it's not really metal. Ended up taking the extra key-ish toy to the hardware store to have real keys made of metal copied from it. The mail box is big enough to hold small packages, but you can't fit them through the slot. Can't recommend at this price point. Would maybe pay 1/2 the price for a minimal use residential box. Not recommended for business.
