Dual-pane Windows?

Is this safe to use on dual-pane windows? I'm reading that tint can shatter dual-pane windows. Is this applyable on the outside of the window with the reflective side still facing out so it doesn't trap heat between the glass panes?
Asked by: steve
With high heat rejection, definitely would only use this on the outside of a dual pane window - saw the same concerns expressed and it makes sense that it could build heat/pressure inside the closed space between the panes.

Is this reflective from the outside?

I'm not allowed to install reflective materials on the window, so I am wondering if this is reflective when installed.
Asked by: JT72
Yes it is reflective - not totally mirror-like, but it is quite reflective - that's the price you pay for 70% heat rejection.

Purchased for a single pane West-facing window in an apartment - needed to be non-permanent due to the fact that it is a rental unit. The film performs very well - appears to live up to the 70% heat rejection specification. It is very expensive, but it does what it says it will do. Installation is just like regular film - a few drops of soap in a water sprayer works well - just soak up both window and film thoroughly - dripping wet, and install when window is in the shade and as cool outside as possible - this avoids bubbles. Plenty of soapy water spray on both sides of film makes re-positioning it and squeegeeing any bubbles out easy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Will not stick to the glass Followed all instructions meticulously, used Gila's recommended solution and tools, prepared the glass in 4 different ways (ammonia based cleaner, non-ammonia based cleaner, alcohol and pure water) and nothing works - the film unpeals at corners and sides, and looks terrible all around from outside. Even tried to install it next day early in the morning in the shade because we were thinking that sun and heat may interfere with the installation, but it didn't help - the film simply won't stick to the glass no matter what we done, how much solution we sprayed or how much and how long we were respraying it and redoing it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT TO BE USED ON SEALED WINDOWS Online FAQ says Q: Do I apply the film on the inside or outside of the window? A: Apply Heat Control films to the INSIDE only. The instructions with the product says to apply it to the outside on sealed dual pane windows. Because of the conflicting information I called the help desk and was told that the static cling could not be used on the exterior as it would not stand up to the elements and couldn't be used on the inside because I have sealed dual pane windows and it could possibly crack the windows from heat build up. Product should state "NOT TO BE USED ON SEALED WINDOWS" could have saved myself a lot of time and energy.

Bought this window film to reduce the head in my office and it works perfectly. Now I can have the shutters open for the outside view and not have the room heat up. Great product and easy to install.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Confusing video and paper instructions I purchased item #10366483-50146358 and I installed it on four narrow windows on the southern exposure of my house. There are instructions wrapped around the film, one of which states if I am installing on a double pane insulated glass (that's me) to place the product on the exterior side of the glass. The instructions also stated to remove the liner from the film by putting scotch tape back to back on a corner and pull off the liner. I tried many times and there was no separation. I then looked at a Gila.com video on how to install Heat Control film and it shows the tape on the corners too and being installed on interior side. I called Gila customer service and advised that the liner was not coming off and the nice lady stated, "oh, your product doesn't have any liner, it is static cling, just cut and spray both surfaces and install. She also stated that it is to be installed on the inside surface. Duh, that is not in writing or video anywhere. I did get the windows covered but found it challenging to get some of the corners to stick, and the plastic film is thick so a new razor blade is important. Today I finished my windows with the adhesive version of the Heat Control film and I think it was easier to install even though it did have a film liner to remove.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor product I purchased the Gila Heat Control Window Film at the suggest of one of the Home Depot Associates. I was told of the ease of applying the film. Well it was easy to apply, however, the film refuses to stick on my windows. I have purchased products from Gila before and did not have a problem like this. I was told you did not have to peel the tint and is was reusable. After three days the film continues to roll up on the corners. I followed all the instructions, but it just refuses to stick. I'm sure the film does everything it says, however, it must stay on the window for it to be effective. With price tag of $40.00,plus additional for spray kit, I thought it would be easier to apply with the same performance of the peel off film which sticks to everything when mounting. Chances are I will have to purchase another type of window tinting as I am very dissatisfied and cannot recommend this at all.
