Customer Questions & Answers

can it be installed on plexiglass

Asked by: Dick
Per https://gilafilms.com/help-how-tos, "Q: Can Gila residential films be applied to plastic, Plexiglas®, Lexan (polycarbonate), or auto windows? A: Do not apply residential Gila films with adhesives to plastic, Plexiglas, polycarbonate surfaces, or motor vehicle windows. On plastic surfaces, the adhesive on the film may cause bubbling or blistering and long darts that have the appearance of wrinkles.Furthermore, attempting to remove film from plastic surfaces may result in permanent damage to the windows. We suggest trying adhesive-free vinyl Glare Control or Privacy Black films on plastic, with careful attention to instruction and trimming."

Why on earth would I want to install a clear film on a clear window? I see nothing in the description or product details that explains what the film actually does -- if anything. I am guessing that it might have some insulation effect or somehow cuts down on UV rays???????? But again, the product description says nothing about UV or any R value. Thanks.

Can I use this spray to remove previous tint to replace with new?

Asked by: Courtney
No, this spray is really only soapy water, meant to let the film move around a little to allow you to work out wrinkles and bubbles. According to the manufacturer, "the easiest way to remove old film is with the Gila FR200 Window Film Adhesive Remover Solution. Or you can loosen the film at the top of the window with a razor blade. Grip the film firmly and pull it from one corner across the window. Adhesive will remain on the glass." Then you would wash and scrape off the old adhesive before installing the new film.

Installation went pretty well, window film is always a little bit challenging. I purchased the installation kit, sprayed the glass and the film, then pressed in onto the glass, squeegeed out the bubbles, trimmed the edges and that was it. Make sure you clean the glass thoroughly prior to installing film, you may even want to gently scrape with a single edged razor blade to get off little bits of paint or whatever. The film works as advertised, the one I bought was supposed to cut heat by 50% or more, and that is the case. It appears mirror tinted and reflective from the outside, and is only mildly tinted when viewed from the inside of the house.

For best results, I recommend using two people for the installation. The film was slightly darker than I expected, but we bought it specifically to reduce UV light so that's okay. If I was doing it again, I'd spend a little longer cleaning the class before applying the film, but our results were still fantastic. It looks like glass, not some cheap film. I recommend this product.

The kit has everything you need, except a good squeegee, to install the Gila window film. We have installed film on three windows using the kit. The cutter is very small and could not be used for anything else. We could have used a box cutter we had on hand. The yellow plastic card used for smoothing out the film was handy, but a plastic rewards card or credit card would have worked just as well. I'm not sure I would have spent the money on the kit if I had it to do over. I would probably must buy the application spray separately, as I did with the extra spray that was needed. The product did live up to its marketing, however, by having handy most everything you need to install the film.

Followed the instructions and the anti-glare window treatment went on very smoothly. It definitely makes it easier to remove all bubbles. I guess I could have cut corners and tried soap and water, but I've learned from experience that sometimes it's better to spend the money and use the product that was designed to do the job, especially when you're up a ladder 6 to 8 feet off the ground. I did not want to have to repeat the procedure if things had not worked out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great kit The small cutting blade is perfect for those corners and hard to reach areas. Squeegee works great and application fluid is good. No bubbles. No air pickets. Use fluid on both glass and Gil's film so it slides in place.work from top to bottom left then right to squeeze all water and air out.

I thought about using my own squeegee and razor to do the installation, but I'm glad I spent the money on this kit. Everything is there in one place and the sharp little knife is perfectly spaced to give you the correct border gap. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful but not necessary The kit was worth getting as a beginner but after a couple windows the blade in the cutter became dull and we went through all the solution in the spray bottle. After we went on the Gila website we found alternative tools and window solution to use so we didn't have to buy another kit to complete the other windows. Although the kit wasn't the value we were hoping for the Gila window film is an excellent product. It's a must have for us AZ folks! I only recommend the kit for beginners or if you just put the film on a couple windows but if you do your entire home you will spend a fortune in the number of kits you would need to buy.
