How do I get a mirrored light strip that comes out 5" from wall to go over the surface mount cabinet?

The medicine cabinet is the 48" mirrored surface mount cabinet.
Asked by: Anonymous
buy a 8 ft 2x6 and cut it down to the width of the cabinet or cut to fit between the walls you are mounting the cabinet on .you can bevel the edges or not drill a hole big enough in the wood to fish the electrical wire thru. paint it stain it etc mount it to the wall then mount the light fixture to the wood it will be spaced out far enough .building a box is un necessary if you want more add another board. .I even use a 1x6 board

48 in. x 30 in. Frameless Surface-Mount Bathroom Medicine Cabinet in Silver is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from I do not recommend Very cheap construction, perhaps that is to be expected. However it goes too far. All three doors are not flat, but curved concave as you look at them. Because of that, two of the doors strike the edge before closing. They can be closed, for now. They may not last long doing that. The shelf "hardware" and support holes could use better quality control, some are too loose. So far, one support fell out and I cannot find it. No spares were provided.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from the mirrored doors warped, The mirrored doors warped after 3 weeks causing the hinges to bind and bend. I Know, a piece of glass mirror can't bend right? well, these do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this product The mirrored doors warp! Purchased in March, by June all three doors were so warped they wouldn't close. There isn't much humidity where I live and there's a functioning exhaust fan & window in the bathroom, and a whole-house fan in the hallway just above the bathroom door. The folks at HD offered to replace the doors and told me that the warranty would apply for another 3 months. By August the three new doors were warped. The local HD folks told me to contact the Customer Satisfaction folks in Atlanta. They offered to replace the three doors with the same doors. I declined. They gave me $50 store credit and said to return the entire cabinet to HD and buy another one. I bought a metal one (twice the price) but when I returned the old one HD wouldn't reimburse me - they only offered Store Credit because the original purchase was in March. I guess I had been misinformed about the warranty. Since I had to pay my contractor TWICE I'm not happy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap, Bad Quality Quality is real bad, I should have spent the extra $100-$200 for a better medicine cabinet. It looks ok from the outside, but the inside is just cheap painted laminate. This should only be used at rental properties. I'm worried it won't last long and will have to hire someone to tear it down and replace it with another.

Purchased this medicine cabinet, got to the job and unboxed it only to find all 3 doors were warped, doors could not even open individually without cracking the mirror. Had to drive back 50 miles to return it. Talk about lose money! I will definitely not be purchasing this cabinet anymore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Can Write Better Instructions Than Glacier Bay OK, a few tips from someone who just installed this cabinet. It does not come with good installation instructions, it might as well have come with none. First, make sure you remove the doors. The instructions do not tell you to do that, but unless you want to end up incredibly frustrated and possibly with broken glass in your bathroom, remove the doors. Also, the instructions tell you to drill four holes into the cabinet and predrill the holes into the wall. But there is no point in pre-drilling into the wall without the cabinet in place, because you won't be able to see the holes in the wall through the holes that you put into the cabinet when you go to line them up. So do this, have your helper hold the cabinet where you want it, then take a pencil and outline the corners. Put the cabinet down, then use a level and measuring tape to measure where your holes will be from the corner pencil marks. (We used the studs, so our holes were 9 inches in on the left, and 5 inches on the right. (We went 4 inches up/down from the top/bottom.)) Then take your measurements to your cabinet and drill the holes through the back of the cabinet. Then have your helper hold the cabinet back up against the wall, match up the corners, and drill through the holes that you had pre-drilled in the cabinet and on into the wall. Then put in the screws. The cabinet does not come with any hardware, which didn't bother me because the hardware that usually comes with these types of things tends to suck, so we used good quality wood screws that we had at the house. We initially tried to use cabinet screws, but our drill is a piece of junk so we could not get them in. Either way the cabinet feels very sturdy. I had no problems getting the shelves to stay put. I also had no problems getting the doors to line up when I screwed them back on. It's really just going to take a lot of patience and an extra person to help you. The total amount of time with the removing the doors, doing the measurements, lining up the cabinet, screwing it in, and replacing the doors ended up being about three hours. I had this same type of cabinet in my condo for five years and it looked just as good as new the day we sold our condo. So we'll see if this one holds up for as long as that one did.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from flawed mirrors again This is the second mirrored cabinet I have purchased, PAID to have installed only to discover the mirrors are like something out of a carnival fun house. One panel will distort and elongate, another will do so in another way. I now have to either take each mirror off the cabinet that is screwed to the wall and try to get replacements that are not distorted or PAY someone again to take it down, get another and hope that the mirrors are not flawed. This is ridiculous. NOT HAPPY AT ALL.

I was nervous buying this after reading some of the reviews, but I decided given the price it was worth the risk. Installation was simple when you know where your studs are. I had no warping on the mirrors after installing and I didn't have much trouble adjusting the one door that was slightly higher than the rest. My bathroom doesn't have an exhaust fan so I guess I'll find out soon how well the cabinet hold ups. I'll update in a few weeks with the results (assuming I can).
