Answer:
A template is included with the product that shows the holes at 18" . I probably drilled a bit under that since I found the template after I was done.

Thank you for your question. The centers of the mounting brackets should be 18" apart, so 9" from the center line. The instructions are available on The Home Depot's product page for this item.

I found mine in the store and brought it home. If you set your "selected" store, then the web site will tell you if it is in stock and will probably say "Pick Up In Store FREE".

This is sold in store only. Our store stock system for 111 shows there may be 3 on hand (typically when it shows less than 5, we like to call the store to verify they can locate the item, in case it has sold out since the last time the system was updated). I also see 7 in stock at the Sandy Plains store, & 5 in stock at Sandy Springs location. I hope this helps!
Thanks for your inquiry & for shopping

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks Great! This looks great in my re-done bathroom. A Lot of compliments! January 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Had to return Purchased this for my new home. Had to return it, one of the pieces would not set correctly. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good So I am using this in an unconventional way as part of my permanent studio lighting kit. The bar has a notch on both ends so that the bar does not rotate which I really needed for this project. As a towel bar it is good construction and easy to install and comes with a drilling guide to make sure you get the holes in the right place. October 13, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Blllaaaarrrggg Tried to install it and wasted over an hour trying to figure out why it would not mount to the wall brackets. Problem 1: they did not look a thing like the brackets pictured in the instructions. We thought all would be well when we noticed that the template looked just like the brackets, so we proceeded from there (why couldn't they change the instructions to match? Seriously, people!). We installed one in a stud and another in drywall, doing both according to the instructions provided. So we thought that was the hard part, and it was done, right? Problem 2: Trying to actually mount the rack to the brackets was the major problem. We tried everything we could think of but it simply would not tighten to the brackets on the wall. It felt like the bracket was in the slot inside, so we would take the little Allen wrench provided (which was a very poor fit too, by the way) and tighten the tiny little screw and it would feel like it had attached to the wall and then...fall right off. This went on for an hour at least. We finally thought we had the left side attached to the wall one last time (it didn't move when jiggled) and went to get the other side tightened down and poof! Both came off like they had never been attached. That was the point we decided to take the hardware out of our wall (and yes, now there are holes in the wall) and get rid of it. I have never encountered something with mounting brackets this poor. We also noted that the workmanship may have differed between the two rod ends, and the entire thing looked cheaply made even for this price. We are very disappointed and will be purchasing and installing something else instead. April 30, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Looks nice but Do your own layout because the pipe is bigger than the layout. If you use the layout the bar has to be cut. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great in the updated bathroom We purchased this and a matching toilet paper holder to finish the renovation of a half bath and they both look great. February 25, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by do not buy I had to install one side in dry wall, the other in a stud. The screws are so cheaply made, they simply couldn't handle installation into wood. The screw heads came right off. Now I have to figure out how to get the rest of the screws out of the wall. January 3, 2015
