Answer:
The shelves are adjustable, you can move them in about 1/2" increments anywhere you want them. Each shelf is 5 pieces, two on either side and 3 supports spaced equally, basically looks like a ladder, and the wire mesh shelf which is very sturdy sits on top of those supports and between the side rails.

Yes, you have the option of making the shelves different heights. You could set up the side brackets and drop the top shelf down several inches and should be fine with your joists. You could even choose to use three shelves if you wanted to.

Yes, you can adjust the shelving to wherever you wish it to be, there are slots up and down the outside rails. There are smaller perpendicular bars for stabilization that lock into shelving wherever you place the shelves.

Answer:
It depends on how much weight you are putting on each shelf. If you put the heaviest item on the bottom shelf or if you do not exceed 100 lb. on the top shelf, it should stand alone. Mine is a stand alone and I have about 200 lb. on the first three shelves and it is not having any issues. I would not trust it for 1000 lb. as it was advertised. It is not heavy gauge material.

With any shelf, always place the heavy items as low as possible for several reasons. One reason is you avoid having to lift a heavy item very high and hurting yourself, second reason is the center of gravity of the entire shelf unit will be lower. With the heavy items on the lower shelf, the center of gravity will be lower which makes the shelf much more stable and less chance of being pulled over. Actually, the more weight that is on the shelf, the harder it will be to tip over.
I dont recall if the instructions recommended securing it to a wall.

this is an extremely stable steel unit. Made to last. If you loaded only the very top shelf with extremely heavy items and went through a 6.5 earthquake I suppose it might tip. Otherwise I think you'll be fine. Nothing in the instructions about securing it to the walls or floor.

Druke, My shelf has been standing alone in my garage when it was empty and is now standing alone fully loaded. So I bought another shelf and now both are full and are standing without any support what so ever. These shelves are very well built and secure. But like I tried to say, it is better when both are standing together - since standing alone is very lonely.

Answer:
Hello Druke,
The unit is more than capable of standing on its own. Like any shelving unit depending on how much weight you plan you to put on it and the environment it's placed; extra security isn't a bad idea. An anti-tip chain to the wall and/or bolts to the floor can help prevent tip overs when items are being placed or removed. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris

Answer:
Hi Druke,
This is an extremely heavy duty unit for home use.
If heavy or delicate items are stored on it, one should always secure the unit to a wall or floor.
This is especially true if you live in an area subject to earthquakes.

These shelves are easy to assemble and do not require any tooling normally. I could see someone occasionally requiring a rubber or deadblow hammer to tap the shelf rails firmly in place on the shelf ends. I did not need a hammer on four of the shelves I assembled in my garage.
Each shelf is designed for 2000lbs or 8000lbs for the entire assembly.

It is actually 72 inches high UNLESS you extent the top shelf past the end pieces and by doing that all the tabs would not be locking in as they should on the shelf supports. I just walked out to my garage and measured it. Other then that small detail it is an awesome unit and worth every penny. I wrote a detailed review however it was rejected by Home Depot.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gladiator Shelving- Good purchase, happy with product The shelving was easy to assemble. The additional cross bracing on each individual shelf adds additional support. Shelves are very sturdy. Supported 5KW generator, 2.5KW, and 1KW generator on bottom shelf with no issues when positioned over cross brace. Had a "step up" in the concrete in my garage. Was able to use the multiple hole configuration on the posts to keep the shelving level. Have recommended this shelving to a few others already. June 2, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth Every Penny! I purchased 3 of these shelving units for my garage that was in serious need of organization. It took approximately 30 mins to build each unit. The strength of these units is truly amazing. My family members had purchased a different brand that cost a lot more than these and they don't even come close to the integrity of the Gladiator Shelves. Not only are the structurally sound but they look outstanding. You will definitely not be disappointed with purchasing these. July 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quick & Easy Install! Built to Last! Storage Galore Purchased this item for my new shed. I was very familiar with the product since I already had 2 in my garage which were purchased about 10 years prior. The unit is heavy duty with large drawers that glide nice and smooth. I appreciate that it comes with rubberized drawer liners to keep tools from sliding around. I love the fact that the unit is mounted on heavy duty locking casters. This makes the Gear Drawer very portable when I need tools, or a work surface closer to a project. The bumpers along the bottom front and side are a nice touch. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. It is a quality product. August 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gladiator Rack Shelving makes a huge improvement to our stor We purchased 6 of the 77" shelving units. One is in our garage and 5 are in our basement storage room. They are large impressive shelves. We purchased them directly from Gladiator since our local hardware chain store never had enough in stock. The box is heavy, so have 2 strong people prepared to get it into place. But putting them together is simple. No screws or small pieces to lose. It's incredible how much you can pack onto the shelves. They are deep so you can turn large storage containers sideways and there is plenty of room to spare. The shelves are sturdy wire grid, not particle board or chip board. Wonderful. November 9, 2013
