I need something to store fishing rods in that looks nice and will conceal my gear. Is this cabinet sturdy enough to do that? It would actually be nice if one side had shelves with the other side open all the way up. Any suggestions?

Answer:
Will not work for your fishing rods. Per the instructions, you need two shelves for sturdiness but could leave out the additional ones. At least one is required as the magnet that holds the doors closed is attached to the shelf.

I think so. What's the worst that can happen without shelves. The shelves do add some rigidity to the cabinet.

Answer:
I wouldn't recommend using this cabinet without the shelves since they provide a great deal of its rigidity. If you're handy with a saw, drill, and 3/4" plywood you could design, fabricate, and install a central divider with shelves on one side. Ensure you attach your plywood shelves and divider to the back and side of the cabinet to provide some rigidity.

I would say probably not. They're fairly flexible, and each component is required to reach rigidity. Also, magnets are mounted on the shelves to help hold them closed. Something else would have to be added to keep the doors shut.

The fixed shelves inside provide not only stability to the cabinet but the shelves also keeps the doors closed with a magnetic latch. The doors would not stay closed with the shelves inside.

You most likely could do it if you mounted the cabinet to a wall.
The shelves to give it some extra support, but it mounted to the wall would not be needed.

Yes it can be used without the shelves. Gladiator also offers Fishing Rod Holders (GAWVXXFHTH) that mount to either the GearTrack Channels (GAWC042PZY) or GearWall Panels (GAWP042PWY). They would be secure in the holders, but not necessarily concealed.

The paint quality is surprisingly good, so I'd give it a shot outdoors, but probably covered, as under your car port. It's not by any means weathertight; I'd expect humidity...and insects...to wreak havoc with dry goods or food stored in it outdoors.

Lucc, the cabinet is not water-tight by any means, but the finish on the metal is outdoor worthy as long as it's not exposed to constant moisture. If it's in a covered carport it should hold up for years.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 302 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good Only had the unit for 2 weeks and happy with purchase. Lots of screws to work through for assembly but not hard and the instructions were good. Recommend leaving the screws a little loose until you get one of the doors attached. I found that my alignment was a bit off and had to loosen screws to correct the alignment. Get someone to help you raise the unit and move it into your target location as it is a bit heavy and you will want help with leveling it as well. I did it all by myself and managed OK, but some help would have been nice. I purchased the drawer unit, the counter-height 2-door unit, and the tall 2-door unit - all assembled and installed in about 8 hours. 4 stars on quality just because the metal is a little thin but still sturdy so I'm OK with it. If you will be moving the unit frequently, might want to consider something with thicker metal. Mine won't be moving for multiple years to come. August 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble 72 in. H x 36 in. W x 18 in. D Steel Freestanding Garage Cabinet I purchased two of these. My only complaint is the poor alignment of the tops of the doors. If you adjust in one direction, it throws off another area. Other than that, I am pleased. Assembly should involve a second person--if nothing else, just to hold things steady while you insert the provided screws and nuts. The second also can serve as the reader of the directions. The directions are well written and the needed Allen wrenches are provided with the hardware. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Damaged Haven't tried to put it together because both sides came damaged, and not sure it will fit together if built. Looks flimsy and not at all like the picture. Wish I had known the back was 5 separate pieces instead of one solid back. Too many pieces to pack back up. Very disappointing. July 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Received bent beyond repair Received 2 of these cabinets from my kids for fathers day, I opened the boxes and neither cabinet could be assembled due to damages. If you order online and have it shipped to the store make sure you check all the parts before you leave June 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to assemble The unit seemed very sturdy and looks great. It was easy to assemble. They give you an extra nut and bolt in the assembly kit, which is great, just in case it is needed. It could use at least one more shelf. The shelf tends to bow a little when loaded with quarts of oil. September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice cabinets Bought three. One had minor damage requiring use of a separate nut/bolt to secure one corner. Otherwise, found them easy to assemble, first one took about 40 minutes, about half that for each of the other two. Suggests you pre-fit the back panels to be sure they are properly arranged - easy to get them inside out. You can still assemble that way, so be careful. All three keys were same code - very helpful.
