Questions & Answers

What kind of primer should i use

Asked by: Joe
Hi Joe, Thanks for reaching out. The primer depends on the surface really! However, we would recommend using Seal Grip 17-921 because it covers most surfaces. Please contact our technical advice team at 1-800-GLIDDEN between 8am-5pm EST if you have any additional questions.

whats the best type of paint to paint old railroad ties? latex? acrylic?

I volunteer my time at a nonprofit type place and the railroad ties that line the parking lot acting as a red tow away zone need to be repainted. what kind of paint is recamended for old railroad ties? I mean its not siding, concrete, metal, or plastic and it is not to be stained. also have an actual concrete curb to repaint. whats best for that?
Asked by: senior volunteer at the alano club of san jose
Hello, We recommend you use exterior acrylic latex house paint for the railroad ties. Our Glidden Premium Exterior product will work. Please prime and prepare the surface as needed. You can use Porch and Floor paint for the concrete curb, Porch and Floor could also be used on the railroad ties. Porch and Floor is a pretty versatile product and it is self priming. Hope that helps and good luck on the project!

Customer Reviews

1 gal. Flat Latex Exterior Paint is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor hiding, poor adhesion to PVC trim I used two colors from this line for my front entry: Heron Gray Satin to match Andersen's "Sandtone" storm door for trim, and California Claret Semi-Gloss (gorgeous red) for the front door (brand new, pre-primed fiberglass door w/ PVC trim around the lite). I noticed when painting the trim (wood, with PVC brick-mould) that the paint didn't really want to "grab" on the PVC. The second coat covered. The Heron Gray color did a decent hiding job, requiring only 2 coats. The door was another story. The paint again did not like the PVC lite trim, and even had initial adhesion issues with the pre-primed fiberglass (I did lightly sand it and clean it). The biggest problem was hiding. I had to put down 5 coats before I got a decent finish that wasn't showing white through--and then had to do a 6th coat on some of the detail work. Adding in dry time, this was a beast of a project. And 2 days later, the paint is still fairly soft. I have no idea how long it will take to fully cure where I can remove my protection from the weatherstripping and be confident that opening the door won't tear the paint. Next time, I'll try something else. To be fair, the weather was hot, so I applied it in a shaded garage at 90F ambient. That is right at the top-end of the stated application temp range. I'm not really impressed with how the paint flows out, adheres, and hides. Perhaps I should have sprayed, or perhaps I should have done a couple layers of flat sheen first to enhance the hiding.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Took many coats to cover, after two months it is starting to peel Took many coats to not only cover siding but even more coats to cover trim. Up to four to five coats. That is after extensive prep work. The paint is starting to peel after two months. Still have two gallons left, going to throw away and use another paint to touch up and finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amateur painting made easy I live in Arizona and have a stucco home. I painted the home with a roller and applied two full coats of GLIDDEN Premium Flat paint. The paint did an excellent job of covering the majority of the uneven surfaces. Some deep crevasse had to be painted with a brush but in all it required very little brush work. After completing the main structure I then tackled the Trim which I also used the GLIDDEN Premium Flat, however a different color, The wood surfaces are old but covered very well and the paint did an excellent job of hiding blemishes in the wood. I did not cut the Paint and believe that it will some time before I will have to Paint again. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the paint and it lasting color. It has been many years since we have used your exterior paint. The house still looks good. We check on the house every so often because we have sold it 8 years ago. We painted it 12 years ago. The current owner has not done any painting. The house is located on a busy intercity road. The grease from the exhaust puts a film on everything. When an owner I could wash the exterior walls and trim several times a year bringing back the beauty of the color making it look fresh again. This is what help sell the house. I am planning on using Gladden again on my current home if they have paint for old siding. Here's to future uses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glidden sports team paint We are huge Seattle Seahawk fans and I wanted to paint my corner bench. I seen that Glidden sports teams colors were better than other paint brands and decided to buy and I am glad I did. The colors are so vibrant it makes the benches stand out. I have gotten so many comments on the corner bench and other bench that I have people wanting me to paint their benches also and asking what paint brand I used. I make sure to tell them only get Glidden the only brand that has the true colors of the Seahawks. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great paint for any project I flip one or two homes every year and I always use Glidden paint for whatever project I am painting. It covers well and always looks great after drying. I have used both interior and exterior and have found they out perform all the other major brands. The Glidden Duo eggshell finish is great for interior walls, like the living room, bedrooms, and hallways. The Glidden Duo semi-gloss is great for the kitchens and bathrooms, The Gliddon premium works well as long as you use a primer first. The Gliddon exterior paint is great it covers well and holds up to extreme weather changes. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awsome paint Spray sealkrete on substrate first allow to dry for 30 to 60 minutes. Then apply the glidden exterior satin finish. I've been a painter for 30 years and I'll give my own personal and professional guarantee that this system will last for 5 to 12 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Great Product I purchased a gallon of this paint for the trim, door and door frame for our exterior kitchen door. This door gets a lot of rough weather - sun most of the day, rain, etc. and since it's on the side of the house, there isn't much of an overhang from the eave. This paint applied wonderfully, covered very nicely and has held up great too. This is the paint that I'm going to use for my exterior projects from here on out!
