Customer Questions & Answers

Would this paint be suitable to use on a previously painted brick home? Current paint is in good condition, do I need a primer first?

We had an area of brick repaired on our 1902 home and need to repaint the exterior to hide repaired area. The house is currently painted and overall the paint is in good condition. The paint currently on the house is also latex and is also white. Will we need a primer? What kind of prep. needs to be done before we paint?
Asked by: Anne
Scrape any loose paint, I would use primer but I have found masonary paints are better on bricks

Is this paint useable as a combination primer paint?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes if only going over properly prepared wood surfaces. 2 coats required then. Exterior primers are always better to use when spot repairing rough areas as paint & primer comb. paints seem to compromise on the primer part. But for general paint over paint this paint is self priming over a clean prepared previously painted surface or non-porous wood.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor hiding, poor adhesion to PVC trim I used two colors from this line for my front entry: Heron Gray Satin to match Andersen's "Sandtone" storm door for trim, and California Claret Semi-Gloss (gorgeous red) for the front door (brand new, pre-primed fiberglass door w/ PVC trim around the lite). I noticed when painting the trim (wood, with PVC brick-mould) that the paint didn't really want to "grab" on the PVC. The second coat covered. The Heron Gray color did a decent hiding job, requiring only 2 coats. The door was another story. The paint again did not like the PVC lite trim, and even had initial adhesion issues with the pre-primed fiberglass (I did lightly sand it and clean it). The biggest problem was hiding. I had to put down 5 coats before I got a decent finish that wasn't showing white through--and then had to do a 6th coat on some of the detail work. Adding in dry time, this was a beast of a project. And 2 days later, the paint is still fairly soft. I have no idea how long it will take to fully cure where I can remove my protection from the weatherstripping and be confident that opening the door won't tear the paint. Next time, I'll try something else. To be fair, the weather was hot, so I applied it in a shaded garage at 90F ambient. That is right at the top-end of the stated application temp range. I'm not really impressed with how the paint flows out, adheres, and hides. Perhaps I should have sprayed, or perhaps I should have done a couple layers of flat sheen first to enhance the hiding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST EXTERIOR PAINT I am currently painting my home in Florida in June. Its HOT. This paint is listed as the best buy by Consumer Reports. I usually consult CR before I buy anything and they got this one right, 100%. I prefer Satin on stucco, I think it repels dirt and looks better longer. I painted white over grey in one coat. I painted 2000SF under roof with 6 gallons with ease. Today, as I got down from the ladder to move it, a sudden rain storm came up and it poured for 20 minutes. I expected a washout on the paint. It did not run at all. I am absolutely 100% pleased with this paint and if CR says its the best, then it works for me. The 5 gallon pail is a big discount. I use a roller screen in the 5 gallon pail and its so easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't buy any other paint! This is the one! I bought this paint based on my CR research. As the previous poster said "CR doesn't disappoint"!!! I painted the exterior of my house several months ago and it looks great. The paint coverage was awesome and I particularly like the satin sheen. I've been compliments all around. I'm sold on Glidden paints!! And this year (2012) around Memorial day, HD was offering a $20.00 rebate on the 5 gal buckets which would be a net of $92! What a deal!! Don't buy any other exterior paint! This is the one! And CR just updated their paint reviews in the June 2012 issue and this paint continues to hold the "Best Buy" endorsement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Took many coats to cover, after two months it is starting to peel Took many coats to not only cover siding but even more coats to cover trim. Up to four to five coats. That is after extensive prep work. The paint is starting to peel after two months. Still have two gallons left, going to throw away and use another paint to touch up and finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage, low splatter, fun to use I have a 1957 house with real wood exterior siding. I've always used a paint brush because in my opinion, rolling makes a splattering mess of me and everything else. Well, I decided I needed to get it done quickly and they say this paint has low splatter. So I rolled it. WOW! I stayed clean, the driveway and surrounding areas stayed clean and the coverage was great! Only needed to apply one coat and I've got no complaints! Looks absolutely fabulous and took so little time that I just might roll it again with a second coat simply because it was FUN! Highly recommend this paint! Pics are a before and after. You CAN tell the difference. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amateur painting made easy I live in Arizona and have a stucco home. I painted the home with a roller and applied two full coats of GLIDDEN Premium Flat paint. The paint did an excellent job of covering the majority of the uneven surfaces. Some deep crevasse had to be painted with a brush but in all it required very little brush work. After completing the main structure I then tackled the Trim which I also used the GLIDDEN Premium Flat, however a different color, The wood surfaces are old but covered very well and the paint did an excellent job of hiding blemishes in the wood. I did not cut the Paint and believe that it will some time before I will have to Paint again. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the paint and it lasting color. It has been many years since we have used your exterior paint. The house still looks good. We check on the house every so often because we have sold it 8 years ago. We painted it 12 years ago. The current owner has not done any painting. The house is located on a busy intercity road. The grease from the exhaust puts a film on everything. When an owner I could wash the exterior walls and trim several times a year bringing back the beauty of the color making it look fresh again. This is what help sell the house. I am planning on using Gladden again on my current home if they have paint for old siding. Here's to future uses.
