I dread putting heavy drywall or anything else up on the ceiling of a 600 ft addition. I like the look of these panels but am concerned about fire rating and installing without a flat surface on the ceiling joists. I would be using these panes in lieu of drywall.

Hello,
Unfortunately the panels need a solid substrate to adhere to. This can be achieved through 1/4" sheet rock or plywood. Both should be primed (don't need to be taped or finished) prior to gluing to make sure the glue has a good clean surface to adhere to.

The panels are class A fire rated. The documentation is on the suppliers (GlobalSpecialtyProducts) website. Read Less

Answer:
Hello,
No they can not be. They need a flat surface to glue to to prevent sagging. I've seen people use primed white 1/4 plywood for this purpose. You could also put up sheet rock, and then prime it. You wouldn't need to finish it though.
Without a solid structure behind the panels, they will not work.

Answer:
Hello,
If it is the small spray popcorn (typical of most) then yes. Make sure the ceiling is clean and secure first so the glue will stick. You could test in a closet or hidden area to be sure if you had doubts.
The glue will create a self leveling effect and allow the panels to stick, you just need to use slightly more glue than if gluing to a flat surface. Typically 1 tube per 2 panels.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ceiling tile-glue-up Greatest purchase ever. Two us of re-did the whole kitchen ceiling with this and it looks fantastic. So easy to do. Love this product. May 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great and hides ugly plaster We are highly pleased with this product! We had a pipe leak in the bathroom above the kitchen and although insurance paid for a plasterer to replace part of the ceiling, it cracked along the repair line and never looked good so we wanted to cover it with a pressed tin look. These styrene panels went up easily, cut easily with a box cutter or household scissors and look great. This was far easier to install than we thought it would be, the panels snap right over each other in alignment at the dot-dash; it would be hard to mess that up. We used "Ceilume Ceiling Tile Adhesive" that is made for these panels, but that has to be ordered, only comes in cases of 6 tubes, and you need twice as much as they say you need, so when we ran out, we finished with "Loctite Power Grab Instant All-Purpose" (in clear) from the store. We pieced together our own fancy molding around the edges. It's important to plan the first panel piece along your straightest wall, because all the other pieces snap in without much wiggle room. If your ceiling has lots of angles and corners, order extra panels, we got 10% more but would recommend 15% so you don't sweat when you get near the end, you can return them to the store or keep 'em just in case. There were not any instructions with the panels, so we had to search online for something, but we didn't really need them, we could have figured it out. The tile pattern in Global Specialty Products Model # 209-50 repeats every 6 inches which is easier to plan than 2 feet; there were 4 x 8 six-inch "tiles" in each panel so if you cut down the middle of one panel, you can flip it over and use the other edge. Keep a dust cloth handy because when we put them on the floor to cut them, they picked up every pet hair and dust mote in the house: high static cling. October 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by try this tile I have an older home that had a lot of cracks and a very un even ceiling. These tile covered the ceiling looks amazing . The ease of the install was a snap got 2 ceilings done in 3 hours with my husband would highly recommend alot easier than replacing a ceiling and it makes the room pop!!!!! March 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Elegant and Looks goregeous These tiles are simply elegant and make my ceiling look like actual pressed tin. I left them white and then trimmed them with pecan moulding. These are installed in my kitchen. Very easy to put up and trim to size even by yourself. I used clear adhesive for attaching. Pattern matches are easy as well. Each piece "snaps" on top of the other edge so line up and straight rows are simple. I only wish I could afford to do all my ceilings with this product but I do feel they are a little pricey. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great! Ceiling tile was easy to paint, easy to cut. Getting it to stick to the ceiling with construction adhesive was a little tricky. Had to use push pins in order to hold it in place until it adhered. But now it looks better than I expected!+ December 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nice looking, easy to put up the tile went up without any problems, customer was very happy August 26, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Faux tin ceiling Panels are very thin and floppy but easy to cut and install. Don't skimp on the glue or the panels will sag. Letting the glue rest for 5 minutes or more before installing to a ceiling seemed to help adhesion. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good looking stuff The ceiling tile is good looking, easy to install, and very user friendly. September 16, 2014
