Green or purple which is better in the bathroom

Asked by: Terry
Purple XP board has greater sag resistance than green board. Purple XP is also mold resistant, while green board is not. If this is a tile shower installation, neither of these products meet code. National Gypsum Company recommends PermaBase Cement Board in tile showers.

Customer Reviews

PURPLE XP 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. Gypsum Board is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product is not 1/2 inch thick I just purchased 2 sheets of this stuff to use in my kitchen to repair the lower half of one wall where a wainscoting was removed. I cut the gypsum board to fit in the area that I needed to repair and to my surprise the new stuff does not march up with the old stuff. The old gypsum board is exactly 1/2 inch thick where this purple stuff measures only 3/8 inch thick. Either HD screwed up and mislabeled this product or 3/8 inch is the new 1/2 inch. My receipt says that it IS 1/2 x 4' x 8' though. I've already cut up one sheet so I assume I'm screwed at this point but I will try to return this stuff and buy something that is actually 1/2 inch thick.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's fine I am using this product for my bathroom as specified in the manufacturers specs. No problem. The specs say it can be used in areas above the shower or tub. It's not intended for areas getting direct water contact, true. In my personal opinion green board was never a good solution for this either. Though, it was allowed. When I was building, I tore out many rotted green board tub stalls. I think this was usually because the tile mastic was not uniformly applied. Just do a search on Goldbond XP drywall and you should be able to find the manufacturers site and specs. That said, local building authorities will differ on their interpretations. The first few sheets I got had some issues with the paper. It tended to peel more easily than I thought it should. The next few sheets were totally fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Performs just how it is supposed to! I have 20 plus years Remodeling. This product out performs other brands that claim they are mold/moisture resistant by far! Always look for the Purple paper for M.R. needs. I purchase all of my Drywall at Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better then green board Great stuff. Used in basement. Green guarded for schools. Scores and snaps great. No fiberglass.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from most fragile drywall I've ever used The corners of this stuff shatter if you tap it even slightly against anything. Most of the sheets I got even came pre-cracked. Do yourself a favor and buy the Georgia Pacific product or something better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's drywall. Kinda boring :-) It does the job for which it's intended. It's drywall -- can't think of much more to say about it!
