I just replaced the cement board in the shower and green board in the rest of the bathroom. The bathroom smells horrible. I asked my tile guy what it could be and he did not know. Sewer, traps all covered. I went to smell the walls and the cement board has no odor but it seems to be that the green board might. Friend of mine says it could be the chemical used to prevent mold. Should I rip it out? it's really disgusting, I cannot sleep in my master bedroom. Bought air fresheners, no good. Does it go away one the thinset and tile is up? Will it still smell in there? Please help!

"Horrible" could mean any number of things. First, get a plumber up in there. The biggest chance of a serious stink like the one you're describing and took the trouble to ask about really is sewer gasses, a trap, toilet, vent, or valve that's siphoning or leaking out. You're asking this on THD's purpleboard (barneyboard) webpage, so do you mean greenboard or barneyboard? It makes a difference. Most guys who work with it regularly (including me) appreciate the fact that barneyboard has ZERO smell, nothing, no funny chemical odors. Some greenboard brands have a chlorine tinge to them. Gold Bond barneyboad's completely stinkless as a rule. So...check the toilet seal if your remodel included a tile floor. If the guys didn't raise the flange and used a basic wax ring seal instead of the more expensive extra-thick ones with the plastic insert...happens all the time. It might also be a breach in a vent stack. It happens once in a while for a variety of reasons, especially after a remodel -- cracked pipe, uncapped remodeled and unconnected vent pipe, incorrectly installed/stuck air admittance valve. The stink will probably stay the same until you repair the stack, cap/connect the vent, or figure out what went wrong with the AAV. Good luck!

Just gutted out 4400 sf. Can you use this throughout the entire house? The customer wants it through out.

The only real problem with using this everywhere you might use 1/2 in. drywall is that it's not as easy to work with as most lightweight 1/2 gen. purpose drywall brands out there. It's heavy, it cracks easily, screws pop all the time, it's harder to cut, harder to trim, etc. You'll need to charge a premium for the labor and calculate more time and waste.

I have done commercial framing and drywall for years so I am not a rookie DIY one timer. This stuff was purchased to do a small remodel and I wasn't real impressed with how brittle it is in comparison to other products I have used. The positive was it was really easy to cut and break because it is so weak...

This seemed a bit lighter weight which seemed like a nice option for carrying up to the second floor, but it's weak. The material crumbles rather than cuts smoothly leaving a jagged edge. After scoring it and snapping the back paper started to peel away from the gypsum. A total waste of money

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's fine I am using this product for my bathroom as specified in the manufacturers specs. No problem. The specs say it can be used in areas above the shower or tub. It's not intended for areas getting direct water contact, true. In my personal opinion green board was never a good solution for this either. Though, it was allowed. When I was building, I tore out many rotted green board tub stalls. I think this was usually because the tile mastic was not uniformly applied. Just do a search on Goldbond XP drywall and you should be able to find the manufacturers site and specs. That said, local building authorities will differ on their interpretations. The first few sheets I got had some issues with the paper. It tended to peel more easily than I thought it should. The next few sheets were totally fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product is not 1/2 inch thick I just purchased 2 sheets of this stuff to use in my kitchen to repair the lower half of one wall where a wainscoting was removed. I cut the gypsum board to fit in the area that I needed to repair and to my surprise the new stuff does not march up with the old stuff. The old gypsum board is exactly 1/2 inch thick where this purple stuff measures only 3/8 inch thick. Either HD screwed up and mislabeled this product or 3/8 inch is the new 1/2 inch. My receipt says that it IS 1/2 x 4' x 8' though. I've already cut up one sheet so I assume I'm screwed at this point but I will try to return this stuff and buy something that is actually 1/2 inch thick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Performs just how it is supposed to! I have 20 plus years Remodeling. This product out performs other brands that claim they are mold/moisture resistant by far! Always look for the Purple paper for M.R. needs. I purchase all of my Drywall at Home Depot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from most fragile drywall I've ever used The corners of this stuff shatter if you tap it even slightly against anything. Most of the sheets I got even came pre-cracked. Do yourself a favor and buy the Georgia Pacific product or something better.
