Why is my fire pit so smokey?

I used my fire pit for the first time with wood logs and the smoke was really bad. What am I doing wrong?

Answer: 
If smoke is the issue then it is probably the wood since that is what was burning. I'm not sure what wood it was but if you bought it I would ask the store you bough it from how to reduce that.
