Can this barrel be used to transport water Does the top have a lid that can be closed tight?

Asked by: gomce
The top can not be closed tight as it has a non-sealable opening for water access. It sounds as though you might require a barrel that is not modified for rain collection.

Instructions say non-potable but food grade, so is this safe for drinking water?

Asked by: becky
The barrel itself is food grade. However, the water coming from your roof may not be potable as it collects various debris on its way from the clouds, across the roof, into the gutter and the barrel. If you want to use the water for drinking, we strongly recommend treating it using chemicals or other purifying processes.

Stand alone?

I'm new to the idea of using a rain barrel. Must this one be hooked up to a downspout on a home's gutter system or can it stand alone in the yard and collect rainwater?
Asked by: Lynnie
Hello, Lynnie. You could let the barrel stand alone out in the open and it would collect water but very slowly. You would want to have some funneling device such as a downspout or rain chain to pull the vast quantities of water from your roof into the barrel. Some people have used large tarps over an area when a roof was unavailable and this also had some success. I hope this helps and thank you for your question.

Does it have a filter on top?

Asked by: Luis
It has a fine mesh screen used to filter out bugs and leafy debris. It does not have a microbiotic filter for making the water potable.

If the top cannot be taken off, where is the removable screen? Please add a picture if possble.

I do not use a spigot, rather I draw water from the rain barrel from the top using a small bucket. To fill the rain barrel the downspout enters directly through a hole cut in the top of the barrel
Asked by: Gary
Hello, Gary. You would not be able to use this barrel by dipping a bucket in the top unless you cut the top off. Here's an image link of the top of the barrel: http://www.goodideasinc.com/images/Good%20Ideas/Products/RB55/200/BigBlue_top.jpg

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really worth it. It saves water and money and was incredibly easy to install. Really worth it. It saves water and money and was incredibly easy to install. I even added an extra spigot and have been so happy with this purchase. I might consider getting another one next year, if this one weather the winter well. A few notes: 1) Home Depot carried this barrel, which I wanted specifically, whereas Lowe's did not. 2) Pick up in store was pretty painless. 3) It was able to fit into the trunk of a four door sedan using bungies. 4) I didn't prop it up, so I have two heavy duty brass spigots for easier emptying. 5) A washing machine hose is a really great coupler for filling buckets manually! Ours had a bubblegum smell (from it's former life perhaps) that we really like.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big Blue for Rain Barrel Project I bought 2 barrels online and picked them up from the store. They arrived as promised and came well-packed in corrugated. The associate also brought them out to my truck. Stored inside the barrel is the cast hose bibb, teflon tape and 2 plastic plugs. The plugs are provided in case you don't want to install the hose bibb nor an equalizing hose. I installed the hose bibb and an equalizing hose to connect two barrels together. There is a plastic debris screen on top of the barrel. I aligned the barrel with this screen directly under the rain gutter down-spout. The first storm brought about 1 1/2" of rain in our area and filled both barrels within an hour. I have a high-profile house with a steep 7 in 12 pitch asphalt roof.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rain Barrel - Great, but secure the accessories Overall, this product was exactly what I was looking for - an easy way to test chemical showers in a research facility - I purchased 3. My only issue with the purchase was the included plug and faucet for draining. These items were sealed in a plastic bag and attached at the top of the barrel. The plastic bag had broken open in 2 of the 3 barrels, so the accessories were bouncing around inside the barrel. The accessories were still functional, though a piece of one faucet handle broke off. I would recommend finding a better way to secure the accessories that come with this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from RAIN BARREL After filling with water to test for leakage, it was found that the two drain holes on the side of the rain barrel leaked after the faucet and plug were screwed in. I had to get a sealant and RE-SEAL the washers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done Came in a huge box, picked it up at the store to save on shipping. It arrived in roughly one week. The finish is not pretty, but it is functional. The bag they use is weak so it broke and the pieces were loose inside the barrel. Just turned it upside down and everything fell out. If your downspouts run close to your walls you may have to figure out how to make them end up right above the barrel screen.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Chemical Smell Unbearable Good strong plastic, that's it. Leaks, the spicket lets the water out a drip at a time, & there are blue crystals that come inside the bucket that smell of extreme peppermint. I have rinsed it many times & have it sitting in the sun for weeks now. Smell will never go away. Food grade? I don't think so. Maybe in a few months it will be usable. The description of this item doesn't mention this awful chemical.
