Answer:
I used the Sand Topping Mix. Just be aware (I wasn't) that you will have to mix an acrylic fortifier with half the water for the Pre Pitch layer because that layer is less than an inch.

Answer:
My shower is a neo-angle shower that is about 34x38 plus curbs. This kit worked well for that size altho, since it's neo-angle, I did have to get an extra Kirb-Perfect.

Is the Sand Topping Mix supposed to be kind of a rough surface when dry?

I just laid the Pre-Pitch layer today and I was expecting the Sand Topping to level out and dry smooth. Instead it's rather rough in spite of patting it with the trowel. Should I use something else when I do the Pre-Pitch layer? Seems like it might be tricky to lay thinset/tile over a not-so-smooth surface. Thanks!

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, cheaper if you buy pieces separately Tip: I bought this kit along with one extra of each piece in case I "goofed". I didn't have to use the extra supplies but if I had, it would've really put a damper on my bathroom remodel schedule! Pre Pitch Pretty decent product. Worked well at helping me maintain the correct pitch but, if you are screed-challenged like I am, I recommend placing the sticks about a foot apart rather than the recommended 2 to 2 1/2 feet apart (unless you are using a really long screeding tool). Also, the videos and written instructions really should spell out for the casual DIY-er what they mean by "properly prepared subfloor". In my case, I have a plywood subfloor and initially poured my concrete right on it. Turns out I need a layer of roofing felt and a layer of metal lath and THEN the Pre Pitch sticks and the concrete. I didn't learn this til a few hours AFTER I had poured that layer so I had to dig it up... Moral of the story: watch every single video multiple times and read every single FAQ section multiple times. The vids and the FAQs are not very consistent in the info they include so if you miss one vid/question, you may miss a really important nugget. PVC Pan Liner This was the most difficult part of the job (next to the Kirb Perfect part)! There is little to no information on how to do those blasted corners! You can't always just "tuck them between joists" because in a remodel, the corners may not have been originally constructed with convenient little hidey-holes like that! And there is no mention of using those PVC corner pieces for where the curb meets the wall. Even videos I found online really glossed over how to handle corners. I found myself trying to freeze-frame several videos, hoping I could utilize something for my own corners. Kirb Perfect This product needs some significant improvement. It doesn't have nearly enough connection points and the result is ridiculously flimsy. The two vertical pieces are screwed together in only two places and the top piece has three places on either side to attach to the vertical sides. Once you cut the pieces down to the size you need, you aren't left with much to hold it together! I ended up using pieces of hay string (which, when frayed, have strong fibers that are like strong thread) to tie everything together so I could place them with more confidence. The video says that if the curbs seem to wobble, don't worry about it. Um. YES, I would worry about it. It's pretty important to have the sides vertical and the top horizontal and it's really hard to maintain that on one piece if it wobbles out of place again while working on another piece of curb! Quick Pitch Like Pre Pitch, this is a pretty decent product. Worked well at helping me maintain the correct pitch but, if you are screed-challenged like I am, I recommend placing the sticks about a foot apart rather than the recommended 2 to 2 1/2 feet apart. Not enough info on the Positive Weep Hole Protector placement. I was using a drain with the threaded side UP and there wasn't any example that I found regarding how to place it. I assumed that it's no different than if you place the threaded side down - fingers crossed. DVD The DVD includes the same videos that you can see on the Mark E Industries website so if you want to save a few bucks, just buy the individual pieces instead of the Kit. I found the information in the videos to be rather haphazard and kind of incomplete and confusing. For example, one or more videos shows painting on a pink waterproofing layer, another shows draping plastic on the walls from floor to ceiling. But when I called to ask about those items, I was told that they aren't necessary. I have a plywood subfloor and, about 3 hours after pouring my Pre Pitch concrete, I happened to read in the FAQs that I need roofing felt and metal lath over the plywood before pouring the concrete. I never heard of these things before. When I took a closer look at the video of the subfloor, I could see that the floor was covered with something but, having never heard/seen them before, I couldn't identify what that stuff was. I figured it was again one of those "you-don't-have-to-do-that" things. Wrong. So there I was, at 11PM, digging up my concrete base and ordering this roofing felt (about a mile of it for my 9SF shower!) and metal lath online. February 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by works as advertised, well sort of.. Pre-slope was straight forward, worked out well. Membrane installation tricky because of the odd angles I was dealing with; difficult to fold in the right places where the folds would not interfere with the curb installation. quick pitch installation was flawless. curbing was difficult to get the angles right and to deal with the folds in the membrane. With patience and perseverance was able to get everything installed with proper slope. My mortar mixture was a little wetter than they suggested in their video but worked out well. Finish was smooth October 28, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by An easy way to build a custom shower pan Goof Proof is exactly what the name says; goof proof! This is a great product, easy to use and almost impossible to mess up. The kit comes with easy to understand instructions and the materials are very easy to work with; no fancy tools required. You only get 6 float sticks with each kit. More than likely you will need at least 8. If you are building a corner shower pan you will definitely need two packages of the curb perfect. I have nothing but good things to say about this product. I would most definitely recommend it to anyone building a custom shower pan. August 29, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for DIY shower pan installation This product took the worry out of ensuring an even pitch for your shower pan. The product is easy to use and comes with an instructional DVD. If you are building a shower pan from scratch, this product will make things a lot easier. Only MINOR issue is that when you build a shower pan on a concrete slab, the pre-pitch needs two-sided tape to secure angled legs to the floor. It's not provided! January 28, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great tool for do it yourself-ers I bought this shower pan kit to build a shower floor for my mom's new house. I did a little research on youtube for some "how to" tips and along with this kit it was a successful project. I definitely recommend it! April 3, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product makes building leak proof shower easy. Made building leak proof shower base and curb so easy and simplified the slope to shower drain.
