Answer:
According to the research I did, you may purchase shelving units that connect to the sides of this shelf but not above it. The prices seem to vary based on the sizes you are looking for.

I purchased a Gorilla heavy shelving a few years ago. It has been in it's factory packaging all this time. I now find that the area designed for this unit is just a bit small, 3 inches narrower than anticipated. The unit I purchased is 84x18x48 wide. Is it possible to return this as new shelving for a smaller size that will fit my project requirement. Thank you for considering my dilemma. No, I do not have the original receipt, but everything is still in the original box with all hardware and instructions.

5-Shelf 34 in. x 14 in. x 72 in. Freestanding Storage Unit-DISCONTINUED is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shelf, I would definitely order again. I ordered 2 of these shelving units to use side-by-side in my basement. I wanted to install them in a narrow space behind my furnace. I have assembled larger Gorilla shelving units before, so I was somewhat familiar with the assembly. I am a woman in my 50's, and I was able to assemble each shelf by myself, in less than an hour. I took a little extra time afterwards to bolt the units to studs in my basement storage area. I would definitely recommend these shelves. They are much stronger than aluminum shelving units which are this depth. Overall, I'm completely pleased.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thin metal, some brackets bent Pro: 1) Support for shelving is a ledge on all sides, sagging of the particle board should not become an issue. 2) Construction requires only a rubber mallet. 3) Arrives with connectors to join multiple ones together. Con: 1) Very thin and somewhat soft metal. Bound together so tightly in packaging that some brackets are bent 2) Strong particle board smell 3) Price for quality compared to other available purchases seems of questionable value. 4) Instructions are images only, no words. Overall I think this is an average piece of shelving.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the price These shelves are exactly as described and are easy to assemble when paying attention to the instructions included and exercising care. In comparison to similar shelves that I purchased long ago, the metal is somewhat "thin" and can be bent, but the thinness does not compromise the strength once all parts are properly assembled, and it is actually a good thing with regard to weight. I purchased two and plan to order two more. The one caution I would add is to take care to not allow the side struts to overlap at the joins; the top strut should be seated squarely atop the bottom one. Good product!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flimsy I purchased this because it was the right depth/width that I needed for a very specific space. For something called a "gorilla rack", and costing $70, I expected a lot more. Th unit is serviceable when fully assembled but be careful when putting it together - it flexes and bends with ease and it is way too easy to damage the risers. When together, the unit did not seem entirely "true" and some of the shelves were slightly warped. If it were not such a pain to take apart, box up, and bring back to the store I would return it - but would still need to find something to fit in the space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only one drawback The upright pieces are half height. This is ok If you want to have two half height units but even then you end up one shelf short since there are only 5 shelf assemblies. If you want to go full height adjustability is somewhat limited since the middle shelf brackets also serve to connect the half height uprights together. That's the only reason I dropped these to a four. They are still a good shelf for the money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not like the old Gorilla I have two set of Gorilla shelves that I bought years ago. I was expecting the same quality from this new purchase and was disappointed that the quality is not the same. The metal pieces arrived bent, which is probably not Gorilla or HD's fault and more the guy in brown, but if they were as high of quality I don't think they would have bent. I bent them back and put the shelves together, but would not buy this again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seemed Flimsy at First, but Holds a Ton of Weight! Shelf seemed flimsy when I put it together but once items were on the shelves it 'strengthen' the shelf and makes it more secure if that makes sense. The website said Made in USA which was another plus for me, but the box has Made in China emblazoned across it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from very average I bought this because Edsal shelving did not offer this dimension. Put this together after having put an Edsal together. this is far less sturdy vertical supports, and lesser quality than the edsal I bought which was larger and less expensive. I like thaat the size is perfect it is functional for my space but lesser quality, a bit wobbly and higher price than the edsal shelving i bought.
