I made a little free library and needed something to seal under a cedar roof. This was it. It stuck to the wood sub roof and I was able to staple the miniature cedar pieces to it and through a severe storm everything stayed dry. Perfect.

I don't usually write reviews. I have been using this stuff for years and will not use anything else. There might be something better out there, but I know this membrane works.
I read a few reviews on here and some people are having trouble getting it to stick. If it is cold, you need to heat it up. If the membrane is cold, you will not be able to press it into the wood grain on your roof, old or new. Which brings me to the next problem, it does need to be pressed into the surface you are protecting. Use a vinyl tile roller if you can, or at least slide a scrap piece or 2x4 over it with some body weight on it. The rubber backing has to be pressed into the wood. If it is 90 degrees out side and you are in the sun the work will be much easier, it will stick to whatever it touches and heaven help you if you need to remove it.
As far a cutting goes, most versions of the Grace products have a very fine wire running in either 4 or 6 inch increments. They call it "rip cord" or something like that. Just grab where the wire is (you may have to fish it out or grab it with channel locks) and pull at a tight angle to the direction of the seam, it splits right apart. Don't be discouraged by the poor reviews, if you are not sure how to install this, or just about anything for that matter, look it up on you tube and watch the video by the guy who looks like he probably does it for a living.
This also works great around doors and windows. Use a heat gun or hair dryer if it is cold out.
Good luck to you, that is all.

Didn't work quite the way I thought it would, everything is great about it but the adhesive isn't that spiffy

Needed to install a drain in small lightwell area and used GraceRoof Underlayment membrane. Easy to work with in layers. I did two layers then used aluminum roof coating to finish the job. Only reason I didn't rate it 5 is I want to see how it handles rain after a year.

This water-ice barrier has excellent properties. It seals well and probably seals around screws and nails driven into it to some degree. It just takes a little practice to apply the barrier since it is very sticky and you will usually get only one chance to put it on a surface. If it sticks to itself, it is best to start over. However, the challenges to applying the material are a testament to how well it will serve as a barrier.
I have not had experience with other brands, but I think this one is worth the higher price.
