I want to use a solar panel kit on my boat dock to charge my 24v boat trolling motor with an ac inverter. System would also power a 1000w boat lift.

Would golfball size hail damage these panels? Would baseball size hail damage these panels? Can homeowner insurance be quoted to cover damage to these panels? How susceptible to lightning damage are these panels?

Answer:
Solar panels are designed to handle up to 1” diameter hail. A golf ball sized piece is slightly larger and may damage the panel. I have heard of homeowner’s insurance covering solar panels, but have not personally verified it. You will want to check with your agent first. A direct hit from lightning will destroy pretty much anything, but the panels themselves are relatively resilient to indirect hits. I Read More

I would be more worried about damage in your inverter or charge controller systems. Read Less

Adding this panel existing sunpower system

This question is from 190-Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel

I have an existing 8.6KW sunpower system that I'd like to increase to 10 KW. The (41) SPR-210-BLK panels that the system has are rated: 210w, 40.0v, 5.25a. The panels are series strings with junction box on each panel. I was told that as long as amps is +/- 5% and total voltage does not exceed inverter max that panels can be mix/matched. Can you confirm that your 190 watt panel would match my setup?

Answer:
SunPower panels use a unique cell technology that is slightly different than what we use. My understanding is that they require positive grounding. If you were to expand your system, it would have to be a totally different system on a different inverter. My recommendation would be 6pcs of Grape Solar 260W on micro inverters. Send an email to support@grapesolar.com if you have any other questions.

Answer:
The 190W panel has 72 cells and you can use one of them on the GS-MPPT-320W charge controller.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Panel(s) In addition to this 190W panel, I also have two 160W panels. These are awesome panels. I have them feeding into a 600W Small Photovoltaic Grid Tie inverter. HIGHLY recommended!!! February 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Panels Expensive for the size but the only ones that will work with my SunTech 175 watt panels. Added 4 to upsize my grid tie system and they are stronger by 250ma and slightly higher in volts. 3 of the first 4 were delaminating and returned to Home Depot. I can't say enough good about dealing with Home Depot very classy people. However the Grape solar people are nothing to bragg about and did absolutely nothing for me considering the expense and time involved to return/reorder and wait for their product to be replaced...not impressed with them. Well made products but too expensive and the company is poor to deal with. There are great panels at much better prices out there just not in this size. July 1, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good value Panels work as advertised, having consistent output and good workmanship. The packaging is not adequate to prevent damage in shipping, as 4 of the 6 boxes had the staples ruptured open on the sides. Three panels have dented and scratched corners but they aren't bad enough to return as the replacements might be damaged more severely. Purchase would get 5 stars if price were lower and packaging adequate. October 8, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Efficient solar panel I can confirm that you need a solar charge controller that meets the high open circuit output voltage of this solar panel. But in return you get a very efficient solar panel at a great price point, shipped free to your local store. I combined it with the Steca PRS 3030 and 2 deep cycle RV batteries for use on my RV travel trailer. It keeps my batteries charged even for extensive camping away from the grid, with lots of power for lights, furnace motor, and laptops. Also be aware that use on an RV probably negates the warranty. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great way to buy solar products! Ordered 2 Grape solar panels, 190 watts each. Have had trouble getting solar panels ordered and delivered here, as we live on an unpaved road and shipping is way expensive. I was able to order the pnels and pick them up at the Home Depot for much cheaper. They are installed now and working. I'm very satisfied. June 18, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good quality Panel performance working as stated. Have 2 panels charging battery's. September 23, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by High Voltage Output FYI This panel outputs around 40 VDC. This means you will have to buy a more expensive solar charger that handles input voltages over the normal 12 to 22 volts. The 30,10 and 7 amp Sunforce solar chargers sold on this site will NOT work with this panel FYI. See the Home Depot Grape Solar 100 watt panel as it IS a 12- 22 volt output panel. March 25, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Another great product from Grape Solar, This panel is outputting more then specs! It has 3 blocking diodes installed in the junction box also this is a high voltage panel You NEED to use a MPPT type controller...volts 36+ November 5, 2013
