Questions & Answers

Will this product be effective on lawns with weeds already sprouted?

We just moved into a new house and weeds cover the lawn (all other houses are weed free) and we want to use a natural remedy due to kids and pets.
Asked by: NewtoGreen
No, its a pre-emergent. Must be applied before they germinate (March 1 summer weeds, September 1 winter weeds)

Can I use this in july?

Asked by: BabyD
Depends on where you live. For a pre-emergent of winter weeds best to wait until end of August or first of September. For summer weeds, first part of March. If you just want to use it as a fertilizer only then sure, July is OK but there are cheaper organic fertilizers if that is what you are looking for. This is mostly for pre-emgerent (suppression of growth of weed seeds).

corn gluten for crabgrass

I already had my guy put down granular weed and feed last Monday. It doesn't include killing the crabgrass. Will it hurt if I put the corn gluten down now, and will it hurt since I already had it treaded the past Monday. Thank you
Asked by: Iberia
Absolutely works for crabgrass, works for me. You must apply it before the crabgrass seeds germinate which is normally March 1 depending on where you live. One sign it is time to apply is when the forsythia bloom. Also it must be dry for about 3 days after applying

In west central minnesota, can this be used now? Will it still prevent weeds if it gets hits with frost or freezing?

How often can it be applied?
Asked by: minnesotadeb
Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) is claimed to work to prevent either germination or root development (claims and research to date are contradictory). Frost or Freezing are not the issues, but application too far in advance of seed germination allows the product to be dispersed and its potential effect diluted. Crabgrass prevention notes suggest application before the soil temp rises to the mid 50's is appropriate. The nature-based recommendations say to get CGM down just before the Forsythia bloom. Either way, some advocates admit that it is about 85% effective even when applied correctly. My experience in PA s is that by July its effectiveness wears off and crabgrass will emerge then if there is no other treatment. Two (2) treatments with granulated CGM load excessive nitrogen. You'll need to mow excessively and the probability for high levels of nitrogen runoff are all but guaranteed. (Lawn fertilizers contribute more excess nitrogen to waterways on a sq. ft basis than even the most intensive farm crop applications.) Liquid CG allows you to reduce that nitrogen load. Good Luck!

I used a chemical pre-emergent in the past and decided to switch to the corn gluten since we have pets and kids playing in the yard. Very happy we did. It does a great job without the chemicals. I live in the Southeast and I apply it on March 1st for the summer weeds and then the 3rd week of August for the winter weeds. Also did some investigating about corn gluten and it should be dry for about three days after applying. No more weeds in the yard, excellent! One other tip, I also use this in my landscaping beds (mulch, etc.) to keep from having to weed each year, excellent time saver. I can confirm though what others have said about the application method and it is hit or miss with some cans whether they simply squirt water or are actually applying the corn gluten (thus the 4 star rating vs 5 stars). I have found about 10% of the cans do have an issue. You can actually see the water turning slightly yellow and you will hear a different sound when it is working. Once I find a good can I will save the yellow top and switch it out with any cans that are having issues then it works fine.

I shook the container well before connecting it to hose, after it was connected and during spraying. Yet after I was finished, I disconnected the hose and poured the residual from the container. That was yellow and seemed thick. Why ? I would have thought it was all dissolved.

This product may not complete get rid of weeds but it has reduced the amount of broadleaf and other weeds on the lawn tremendously. When I stop using it, the weeds grow wild. I am using this product because some people that I know have problems with their health because of the chemical herbicide.
