In west central minnesota, can this be used now? Will it still prevent weeds if it gets hits with frost or freezing?

How often can it be applied?
Asked by: minnesotadeb
Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) is claimed to work to prevent either germination or root development (claims and research to date are contradictory). Frost or Freezing are not the issues, but application too far in advance of seed germination allows the product to be dispersed and its potential effect diluted. Crabgrass prevention notes suggest application before the soil temp rises to the mid 50's is appropriate. The nature-based recommendations say to get CGM down just before the Forsythia bloom. Either way, some advocates admit that it is about 85% effective even when applied correctly. My experience in PA s is that by July its effectiveness wears off and crabgrass will emerge then if there is no other treatment. Two (2) treatments with granulated CGM load excessive nitrogen. You'll need to mow excessively and the probability for high levels of nitrogen runoff are all but guaranteed. (Lawn fertilizers contribute more excess nitrogen to waterways on a sq. ft basis than even the most intensive farm crop applications.) Liquid CG allows you to reduce that nitrogen load. Good Luck!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Xcellent Support I had a couple of questions, so I called the toll free phone # in the attached information. I received one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. As to the product itself, only time will tell, but so far NO dandelions have been seen in my lawn!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works if you understand what a preemergent is. This is not a weed killer, it is a preemergent. If you apply this too late in the Spring AFTER weed seeds have germinated you will get weeds. The weed emerges from the seed, pre means before, before the emergent of weeds. So yes, if you apply this at the end of Feb, beginning of March, then it works, if you apply it in April or May, it will not because the weeds have already germinated. It doesn't help to post a review of a product saying it doesn't work, if it wasn't used properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product! First of all, You have to use this product properly and you will not be disappointed. I've tried several similar, corn gluten based products so far, but this one is simply the best. Being a non-selective pre-emergent herbicide means that it keeps ALL seeds from germinating. This means that it needs to be applied to lawns that are already esablished, and care needs to be taken to not apply it where seeds have been planted which you want to grow. If you already see weeds growing in your lawn, it is too late for this product, at least as a weed killer. It will still prevent more weeds from germinating, as well as helping to make future applications more effective. Overall, a great product, safe for kids and pets, and a price is a steal - what else do you want?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Corn gluten Works good you have to reapply every 3 or 4 weeks to keep crabgrass away

Rated 3 out of 5 by from questionable coverage I could spray the product very easily. I did not have any issues with clogging, like others seem to have had. However I emptied the container rather quickly, nowhere near the 2000 sq.ft. of coverage it advertises. I probably did not cover even half of that. Maybe my hose had too much pressure?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where have you been all my life? I bought this product and the dry equivalent by another manufacturer. I like having both, but either is good. It's surprising a pre-emergent isn't more popular. Even in store, they had to research it and found HD did carry it on-line. It's safe, non-toxic to pets and the environment, and the nitrogen content also acts as a fertilizer. What's not to like?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good Product. I used corn gluten meal in the dry form before and love the results but it's not available here and too expensive to buy via the mail. I tried this liquid form and I'm very happy with the results. I don't know how the weed suppression will work yet, but the dry CGM worked very well at keeping the weeds down for about 3 months. This liquid product really got my grass a nice dark green and thicker. I used two bottles to cover about 4000 sq feet. The grass got much greener after 2 weeks. I will put it down again in Sept/Oct. It's well worth the money.
