Customer Questions & Answers

Does the dusk to dawn feature use a photocell and is there a switch override?

Asked by: Peter

I have purchased two different sets of outdoor lights with the dusk-to-dawn feature. Both worked well for oh, say, 6 months. Then, poof--no more

What is going on. Is it " User Error" or does this function just not last?

1-Light Outdoor Old Bronze Wall-Mount Lantern is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Generally happy; good buy I'm satisfied with this purchase. I have a dark brick house, and our old black fixture blended in and looked really dated. I had only two criteria for a lantern to replace it with: white & dusk-to-dawn. Seems like there should be a ton of options, right? Not the case. I searched numerous stores and sites and found a grand total of two dusk-to-dawn lanterns that come in white (both right here at Home Depot). So while I'm generally happy with this light, the lack of options is still disappointing. It's a little small, as others have said, and it doesn't take a standard screw-in light bulb, but a GU style. It's worth noting that when I opened the box, the fixture looked off-white, more of a cream. But once I took it outside, it looked white. So don't be deterred you if you open the box and think it's the wrong color. The frosted glass looks really nice, but you have to piece it together yourself (which isn't difficult, just seemed unnecessary to ship it unassembled). The whole fixture is closed off enough so that bugs can't get in. Overall very satisfied with this light.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Light But Not a Good Experience My wife and I decided to buy 4 lights. Three wall mountable lights and 1 post light. The ones we had were falling apart and the wiring was dangerous. Took some time to assemble these as each glass pane has to be installed and a couple of other pieces need to be fitted before mounting them. You have to be careful with the panes as the mounting hardware can and will chip the frosted glass under even the slightest amount of pressure. I found it best to hold the brass prong so it didn't rotate into the glass. No big deal after I figured that out. One of the CFLs was shattered so I was down to three of four. Mounted the lights on either side of the garage. No problem. They looked great. Mounted the light at the porch, again, no problem, looked great. Switched them on, tested the sensors (still some daylight out so I covered the sensors with my finger), the garage ones worked great, but it was a "no go" for the porch light. As the sun was going down, I took the porch light back off the house expecting that a wire came out of one of the wiring nuts. Nope. My wiring was still good. At that point, I remounted the light and took the frosted glass section off. Examined the bulb and it looked good. Took it out and put it back in. Still nothing (its now dark out and the garage lights came on automatically - another successful test of those two). Took the bottom frosted glass section off one of the garage lights, took its bulb, and installed that bulb in the porch light. Perfect - the light came right on, so the bulb that came with that light was also bad. My recommendation for buying these is that the fixture is great, but you might want to buy the replacement bulbs at the same time because the ones they supply are garbage (at least 50% of the time in my case). I have yet to install the post light because my current one still works, but its an E26 socket instead of a GU24 and I need to swing by the store to pick up some replacement bulbs so I don't install fixtures without a bulb. I already have one that doesn't work - I don't need to make it two. So, the entire experience was a hassle, but if I would have received good bulbs as expected and as promised by the manufacturer and package labeling, it would have been about as good as anyone could expect. I would still buy these lights, but I would buy my replacement bulbs at the same time. I don't really care about the cost but I'm going to talk about it anyway because someone who reads this might care. Per the online home depot website, a 6 pack runs about $19 at my local home depot (after local sales tax), so I'm out a little over $6 because the vendor provided broken/non-functional bulbs. (Only ~2.5% of the overall cost of all 4 fixtures.) Not worth my time to try to get free replacements, but if you do care about the extra money, consider this your warning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Porch Light You have to assemble much of the light. Not a big deal, but it takes several minutes each if you know what you're doing. The glass panes on all the lights had some kind of stain. It came off with a cleaner and considerable effort. It uses a bulb with a GU24 base. It's common but not standard. That means you won't get the best price when you need to change the bulb. The package comes with a CFL bulb. Notwithstanding, the lights look good and the day/night sensor works very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great porch light This fixture was very easy to install, looks great, and works as expected -- on at dusk and off at dawn. No more coming home to a dark porch or coming home from work and finding I forgot to turn off the light before leaving the house. The only glitch was the bracket where the screws in the center were tooooo tight. I needed my son to work it loose, otherwise it was a 15 minute project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks good, works well, has special lamp This was installed for a relative who really likes the looks and functionality of this lamp. It looks good and matches her house's white trim and so far it works very well so she is extremely pleased with it. The photocell for the dusk-to-dawn feature works correctly and turns the light on and off at good times. The way the lamp is constructed it doesn't reflect light up and so the photocell isn't fooled by the light from the lamp (causing some other lamps to turn themselves off and on). The weather sealing seemed good (lots of gaskets and rubber washers on the upper screws to keep water from getting in). Note: This lamp uses a 13 watt CFL with a special base. That's OK and it's brightness is quite acceptable, and replacement lamps were available at the store for when the bulb needs to be replaced. But just as an experiment I tried to improve on it a little bit and see if I could make it even brighter and purchased another lamp of higher wattage with the correct base. But apparently the lamp base is keyed for a particular wattage bulb and the higher wattage CFL I purchased would not fit and wouldn't "click" into the base. In thinking about it, it's probably just as well as I'm not sure that the photocell is rated for running the larger lamp, which may be why they are using the special bulb with it's bulb keying, in order to keep people from burning out the photocell with either a higher wattage CFL or even an very much higher wattage incandescent. Don't take this as a negative. I'm just mentioning this in case someone else was thinking of trying the same thing. The brightness of the CFL bulb that comes with it was the same wattage (13w) and brightness as the fixture it was replacing so it's really bright enough, I was just trying to further improve on it. (... I'm an engineer, so I'm always doing experiments to see if I can improve things. ;-) Overall it is a good looking and well-functioning outdoor lamp that everyone is happy with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright, Great auto on-off Feature The light is nice and bright and the auto on-off feature works great. This is exactly what we needed. The light looks nice too. Assembly is required, but it was easy to do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work I thought this was the perfect light for my front porch. I assembled it and replaced my existing dusk-to-dawn light with it. It didn't come on that night. Troubleshot it and found out the bulb, which was included with the light, didn't work. Went to Home Depot for a replacement bulb. The light worked for 3 nights, then quit. Voltage meter shows 120V at the house, only 5.8V coming from the light fixture to the bulb. I am returning the fixture. This was way too much trouble for a porch light.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very bright and truly dusk to dawn! We first purchased 2 of these lights for either side of the garage. This after trying the solar route without success. I think "sleepers" is the best way to describe them: you may be hesitant at first, and you may even end up passing it up to look for something else. But if you are one of the lucky ones to make the purchase you end up being pleasantly surprised. These lights are SUPER bright, truly dusk to dawn so we don't need to worry about switching them on or off, and the frosted glass makes them look great (you don't have to worry about the aesthetics of having a swirly CFL bulb inside). We actually ended up purchasing another one for our porch light, and then we just bought the post version for use on our lawn (which we can't review because we haven't installed it yet...but I'm assuming it will have the same track record as the 3 we already have in use). You have to put the unit together before installing (put the pieces of glass inside, bulb in, top on, etc.) but not a big deal. The only reason I took one star off is because the bulb isn't a standard screw in; it's got 2 you have to hunt around for those bulbs. HOWEVER, while looking at an online shopping site for some extra bulbs to purchase and have handy, I discovered that they sell adaptors which enable you to use the regular screw in bulbs with the light - SCORE!! I would definitely recommend this light.
