Do you need to seal the wood before you fill with dirt ?

Asked by: Pam
I would not seal it. The chemicals in the sealer will leech into the plants. That is why it is made from cedar.

Could casters be attached to the bottom?

I have a long, open driveway leading to the alley. There is more asphalt than yard, so I wanted to buy two beds, put casters on them so I could kill two birds with one stone--have a garden and block the open end so people won't use it as a drive through, but still be able to move them if need be. Could casters be fitted to these beds? Would they hold the weight?
Asked by: Lin
This frame has no bottom. If you want a movable bed you would have to fasten it to an extremely heavy base framework because the dirt fill is VERY heavy and the side retaining rails are very thin.

The only negative- assembly directions and illustrations were not the best. However, it was easy to figure out. I did decide to staple heavy plastic sheeting on the inside walls as I felt this would stop soil from leaking out of the small cracks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mixed it up. and it turned out gorgeous! We shortened one bed by taking out he middle tier. This made a wider lower tier to fit in an "A-frame" cucumber trellis, and gave us 30 inch boards to put low herb beds in between, with trelisses for peas. We added stepping stones in the lower beds so I can walk in between and access the tomatos that are growing innthe top tiers. It makes our old vegetable garden along the fence an absoute centerpiece of the yard.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3-tiered cedar raised garden bed It looks good in the picture but outside it's kinda flimsy and the instruction was not clear. I mistakenly put them together incorrectly but could not undo it. From the picture I thought the garden bed had the bottom so it can be put anywhere. When I started putting it together, I realized it can only be put on the dirt ground not on patio or deck. Not recommended.

Easier if you make sure the ground is level first. For the back corners, the bottom post needs to extend a little into the ground allowing for overlap between the tiers and making the cap level on top. I predrilled the caps even though the unit came with very nice self-tapping screws. Regarding the amount of soil needed, the instructions said 19 cubic feet but I used 17.5 on two of the units and but 20 on one unit because the ground was slightly concave. If you put the soil in after the units are in place makes just don't push down of the front facing boards on the top two tiers because there is nothing to support them. And if you have a mallet, it makes it easy to pound the boards into the slots. The units have been in place for two weeks and they look great, better than expected.

I bought this product and its looks very nice with easy assembly etc. Only problem is the wood is very flimsy and not sure if it will last long. This is the problem with online purchasing where the picture looks very sturdy and neat while what we get is very flimsy and crude. I wish HD had the sellers held to a certain product quality level that way we are not ripped and deceived by fancy pictures.

When they arrived the boxes were badly damaged. The wood pieces that were specially cut to fit together properly looked like they had been torn instead of cut. Large shredded pieces of wood at each corner where they fit together. Maybe "Greenes" needs to invest in some new cutters or have theirs sharpened. Poor workmanship and quality control.
