Do you need to seal the wood before you fill with dirt ?

Asked by: Pam
I would not seal it. The chemicals in the sealer will leech into the plants. That is why it is made from cedar.

how much soil is required to fill?

Asked by: Tustin
I bought 5- 20 lbs each of garden soil and used the 4 or 5 bags of soil conditioner I already had... I also put a weed blocker screen below it..

Could casters be attached to the bottom?

I have a long, open driveway leading to the alley. There is more asphalt than yard, so I wanted to buy two beds, put casters on them so I could kill two birds with one stone--have a garden and block the open end so people won't use it as a drive through, but still be able to move them if need be. Could casters be fitted to these beds? Would they hold the weight?
Asked by: Lin
This frame has no bottom. If you want a movable bed you would have to fasten it to an extremely heavy base framework because the dirt fill is VERY heavy and the side retaining rails are very thin.

The only problem with this unit is, the weight of the dirt pushes out the wood slats in back and the dirt spills out. It should at least have a liner provided and maybe thicker wood slats in the back to prevent bowing and dirt falling out. Just the potting soil alone bows the wood easily in the back. If you can remedy that, it's a good concept and should work great!!

As mentioned in other reviews - the connecting corners were very rough and sometimes a little difficult to work with. But overall it was what I was looking for. I covered the bottom level sides with plastic, added chicken wire to the bottom to prevent gophers and partially buried it in my existing garden and saved me on the fill dirt overall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mixed it up. and it turned out gorgeous! We shortened one bed by taking out he middle tier. This made a wider lower tier to fit in an "A-frame" cucumber trellis, and gave us 30 inch boards to put low herb beds in between, with trelisses for peas. We added stepping stones in the lower beds so I can walk in between and access the tomatos that are growing innthe top tiers. It makes our old vegetable garden along the fence an absoute centerpiece of the yard.

I bought this product and its looks very nice with easy assembly etc. Only problem is the wood is very flimsy and not sure if it will last long. This is the problem with online purchasing where the picture looks very sturdy and neat while what we get is very flimsy and crude. I wish HD had the sellers held to a certain product quality level that way we are not ripped and deceived by fancy pictures.

Instructions could have been easier to understand. A couple of the boards were somewhat warped and the dovetail ends did not all match up exactly. It took a little maneuvering to get it all put together. All in all it is nice and I hope to grow some great veggies this summer.

I only used a hammer at times to gently tap boards in. You must make sure the boards stay fairly parallel to the ground when sliding or tapping into slots to reduce risk of breaking the tenon (it also makes it much easier to slide in). Looks nice and seems sturdy enough to last many years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's working! I had to fill some gaps but it's nice looking in my yard, easy to put together. Takes lots of soil so be prepared. I'd post a pic of my garden but doesn't look like I can. I'm growing a little grilling garden. First time gardening and this is perfect for me. If I don't kill everything, I may get another for next year.
