Answer:
I don't know without reading the specifications for the item on the website. If it doesn't specify wood species, look for wood treatment, i.e., the rot preventers. The specs/other info should indicate that the wood is/is not safe for edible crops.

Pop quiz! What is the cubic capacity of your garden bed?
Hint: Length times width times height (all in feet) = cubic volume
Your bag of soil may show volume in quarts, square feet/inches/yards. Lots of free utilities to convert from one measurement to another:

I want to just build one of the sections to begin with and then see if I want to add to it or put the other sections somewhere different in the yard.

You simply slide the side boards into the post groove of your existing raised bed and finish the new attached one. You will save on the number of side boards that you will need, but that's ok because you can use them for replacement or to add height to a new kit. If your posts have a cap at the top, you will want to remove it before sliding the side boards from the new kit, then replace it when done. i have 6 raised bed gardens attached together for my gardens. Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 70 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great kit ! Very pleased ! I was planning on building my own raised beds. I wanted cedar. I looked at local box stores and my local lumber yard. Cedar is VERY expensive these days. Long story short, I ordered this kit for half of what it would have cost me for the lumber I wanted. It isn't as thick or as smooth, but you know what ? It's a garden, not a dining room table. I like the idea that I can add to it with another module. It was easy to put together and I am very happy with the product and the price. May 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fine Some of the slats were a little warped and had to be manipulated into place July 5, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible boards in one box We ordered this box and a 4x8 box also. The 4x8 box had really nice boards, all the pieces and it was very easy to put together. This box however was very warped and rough. If I ever wanted to paint these I'd have to extensively sand the boards down. They were very weathered. Especially compared to the other box. We were short a few pieces and the company gladly sent those our way. They didn't have any sort of comment about the rough, weathered boards. All in all, they were really easy to put together and some of the boards look really nice. I just wish they all looked as nice. May 17, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed with the product. From the packaging it appears this was an item that had been returned. The screws were missing. The wood compared to another Greene's garden bed purchased to add on to this one was of poorer quality and not sanded as the other one was. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the results, and so easy to put together! I have been disappointed with online purchases in the past, and was really hoping this one would be different - AND IT WAS! No nails or screws - just slide the boards into the posts and it's together! Configurable, and can easily be added on to, as well. In one afternoon, it was put together, filled with dirt, and plants were planted! So very pleased with the purchase and the results. Check out the picture to see how it turned out! September 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Enjoying my garden I love the fact of keeping my garden raised so the dogs don't run through it. It also helps to have your garden elevated for weeding and picking veggies. I have had this bed for a year and it still looks great. My husband and I were impressed and added to our garden this year with another raised bed purchase. You won't be disappointed if you decided to purchase and make a raised garden of your own. May 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Missing many parts I ordered this product online and picked it up at our neighborhood store. It's missing 8 pieces. 8 pieces you HAVE TO HAVE TO BUILD IT!! I tried to contact the company and got put on hold for 20 minutes. I finally hung up. I'm disgusted! May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent raised garden kit I have 6 of these raised gardens from years past and this year ordered 3 more. They are easy to put together and the company is wonderful to work with if something is needed April 19, 2016
