What is the sheer strength of this screw

Building inspector requiring details
Asked by: Steve
Screws have not generally been recognized in framing application by most building codes and the NDS, hence they are not considered structural fasteners. Since Drywall and Deck screws are not considered structural fasteners, we do not publish the shear values for them. We do have tensile and withdrawal values available for screws.

I recently had to disassemble 2 sections of fence and removed the screws I had used then. The screws still looked new. I reused them when I rebuilt the fence. I didn't have a single screw head strip out even driving them in a second time using a #2 Phillips tip. I did replace the tip once as the one I was using was getting worn. Use a good tip and the screws will work great. The screw heads on the wooden slats have not corroded or stained the fence slats.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seem to hold up These screws are susceptible to stripping; correct phillips head size is a must to prevent this. 1 in 50 have excess coating in the head needing scraped out before driving. Coating seems to hold up well to weather so far.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very thin coating on threads. Excessive coating in head. One out of 20 or so screws was unusable because the coating filled up one of the grooves in the philips head. When I was using the screws to temporarily hold down plywood on the work bench for cutting, after unscrewing the plywood, the coating had worn off the screws. They are gold underneath the coating. I have used gold screws in the past on outdoor projects and they rust badly over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does what they were bought for they really hold the 2 pieces of wood well. easy to drive and very solid. I had only 1 head strip out of probably 30 screws, but it was my fault. just make sure your Phillips driver fits snug in the screw head, or you'll spin out as I did
