Customer Questions & Answers

If the glass is broken, can the door be unlocked?

Asked by: Dodg1988
Yes, my home was broken into by the glass panel being kicked until the bolts that held the bottom window were broken. Then the thieves put their hand thru to the unlock button on the door knob and, unlocked the door. I suppose I could have filed for they advertised money they'd pay if I was broke into. But, I felt it was partly my fault, for not making sure my brother who was staying with us choose not to use the "key in and, key out" lock. He was afraid of getting out in case of fire. We now always use the " key in and, key out" lock. But, if I rent the place those kind of locks don't meet city rental code. The door has given me peace of mind and, as of yet kept out people more then a few times. The door shows cosmetic damage where people have tried but failed. Spay paint touches up the scratches just fine. I believe as long as we use the right locks, no problem.

Customer Reviews

36 in. x 80 in. 501 Series Genesis Steel White Prehung Security Door is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor review on Grisham security door The door was special ordered at Home Depot. It was in its shipping cardboard wrong from the factory. This side up was actually the door bottom and the top installation flange was very bent. After unwrapping the door we found damage to the screen and paint chipped from the metal where you open the door. Also it looked like bad welding and severe grinding at the same spot which was painted black. Our customers want this door and now we are waiting for another so just in case I ordered 2 and hope 1 of them is acceptable This is what happens when products like this are made in China instead of the USA. Andto let the customers pay for our labor to order the door. Pick up the door and get set up to hang the door and then to take it back and then go in 2 weeks and get another one. The door sells for $209.00 and we have over that in labor time and gas and no door hung.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Header cap was damaged, but still happy This is a good looking / solid door (especially for the price.) Unfortunately, the header cap was really warped and it took 3 weeks for me to get a replacement from the manufacturer. Other than that, no complaints.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor packing There is no room to install a closer at the top. The packing is minimal, so check the product before you take it. My glass hold downs were all bent.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks great, but not sure how secure it is I have mixed feelings about the door. One the one hand it looks great compared to the other security doors I've seen. On the other, I've had a number of issues with it since I decided to install it myself. -- I ordered store delivery because it was the cheapest option. It took them like 2 weeks to deliver it and then the package was severely damaged on the outside. And by the time I got it home (just a couple of miles) I realized it was also not properly secured within the package. -- Installation instructions are a nightmare. I don't think the person who wrote them even saw the door themselves or tried to follow. I do all house projects myself, but this is the first one I thought was unnecessarily complex and could have been made easier if the manufacturer put a bit more effort into it. -- The door looks sturdy, but I don't think it's actually secure for two reasons. First, the say the glass insert is mounted to the door frame doesn't seem to be able to sustain even moderate impact. I think that even shaking it for a couple of minutes will just make the insert slide off the hooks it is supported by. Second, the way it attaches to the jamb is a bit questionable. I understand if you live in a city it's unlikely someone will just unscrew your door and take off the frame. But I can imagine that in a location where they have a couple of minutes where noise is not an issue, the door can just be unmounted completely with not much effort. I'm not an export in breaking into places though, so it's my personal unprofessional opinion solely based on visual observation. So, if this was another product, I would have returned it and looked for a better one, but after spending for much effort and time on it I just don't want to deal with it. It's not perfect, but it makes my place 10% more secure than it was, which is potentially good enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality Home Depot installers put this door in because the frame was not perpendicular or parallel (more like a rhombus). It involved shims and a second person to assist. Would have been impossible for me without help. That being said, the door is solid, pending some longer personally attached wood screws into the door frame for the damper due to dry rot. Not faulting the installers. They didn't have the right length screws to hold the damper securely to the door frame. Otherwise, the door fits well despite the difficulties involved in the installation. I provided the deadbolt and door knob as the door does not come with that hardware. They fit perfectly into the latch plates. Very satisfied with the whole job.

Only negative is the fact that Home Depot will not come measure for the door even if you do pay for install depending on the age of the house, so I did not pay for an install being that I had to measure and make sure I had the right size door. The online chat recommended the wrong size door, and I had to re order. The second door fit, but I had to frame it out to make it fit correctly. I love my door and appreciate it more because of all the hard work for me to install it myself.

Not all Grisham doors available are picture on this website, you'll have to go in and they'll give you a brochure with many, many more to choose from. Choose wisely because it is considered a specialty order and cannot be returned. They returned mine because the installer said it was warped and didn't fit right. New one didn't fit too perfect either, the deadbolt only goes in about 1/4 inch! Beautiful door once it's in but not what I was expecting. Once you order it, it's yours!
