Answer:
Great question! You can vary it if you like, but it will take up to 10 inches. We have put in 8 inches and our tomatoes are doing fine.

I am growing tomatoes in mine (hoping to keep the neighborhood bunnies and squirrels out) and am using a circular tomato trellis to help them grow. When I first planted everything, the trellis stood up fine. I filled the bed with soil to about an inch below the rim but found that after several weeks, the soil settled and it needed more in order to hold the trellis up. Next year, I think I will lay the soil and add water for several days to make room for more soil before planting. Read Less

Answer:
It drains very well - the boards below are spaced so water will drain automatically. There is a fabric liner that will hold in the dirt, but allow the water to drain. I can imagine if a hurricane came through, it could be an issue, but with a couple of midwest rainstorms that came through over the past two weeks, we have had NO issue with drainage.

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what it said it was. Happy every day with it. Super fun to assemble. quality is nonpareil. Based on the description, it is EXACTLY what we wanted. We didn't want a cheap, unreliable garden planter. We wanted something we can rely on. And it surpasses this because it's also nice to look at. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product My goal was to purchase a planter that can go on a deck, that was sturdy, visibly good looking, and easy to put together. This Garden Bed provided all of this. Great product. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product! beautiful big elevated planter. very easy to snap together for 2 people. light enough to carry easily from garage to back yard. the food- safe finish means it will continue to look good, a nice rich color. the quality of the construction and the materials is excellent. I am buying another as a gift! November 29, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality Product After reading all of the positive reviews I purchased this as a gift for my girlfriend.......she loves it!! Assembly instructions were straight forward and no tools required. We are thinking about purchasing a 2nd one. June 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I was looking for! If a raised garden can be "classy" then this one is definitely classy! I arrived in record time, was very easy to assemble, and it is nice not to have to either bend over or knee down to "work in the garden." I arranged mine with vegetable and herbs and 1 week later, everything seems to be off to a good start. A few of my friends saw mine and have ordered one for themselves. April 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Buying a second one! Love, love, love this! I bought the smaller version to make sure it was a quality product and fit my needs. We have several neighborhood creatures that have been very well-fed off my garden for the past two years. This year, I am reaping all of the produce and the bed has stood up beautifully in the rain and crazy weather. I plan to purchase a second bed for next year. Easy to assemble if you have two people. I tried it myself to start and found that getting the pieces to balance while I pushed them together was a little challenging. I highly recommend this product! July 26, 2015
